AmSafe is highlighting the advantages of its new side-facing divan airbag restraints, leg flail mitigation airbag systems and lightweight conventional three-point lap belts, weighing 20 percent less than those currently installed. The company (Booth No. C12740) is opening a new market for its airbag systems in airliners and larger business jets, following the FAA’s update of technical criteria for side-facing seats.
• Require manufacturers to modify restraint systems vulnerable to being used incorrectly in newly built GA airplanes and to modify restraints in existing airplanes.
• Revise the guidance and certification standards for restraint systems to reduce the likelihood of misuse.
Piper Aircraft has selected Millennium Concepts to provide the passenger and crew seats for its new PiperJet Altaire. According to Kevin Reifschneider, Millennium’s president and managing director, the seats have been tested by the National Institute for Aviation Research and proven to withstand loads of up to 30gs while maintaining compliance with FAA requirements.

Phoenix, Ariz.-based Amsafe Aviation has been selected to provide inflatable restraint systems for the pilot and copilot seats in the Adam A700 twin-engine very light jet currently in initial (non-conforming) flight-test and scheduled for certification next year. The restraints, installed as an integral part of each pilot’s lapbelt, are designed to inflate within milliseconds of a crash to protect against head and upper-body injuries.
Contrary to a popular misconception, most aircraft accidents are survivable. This fact has been documented by the NTSB, which analyzed Part 121 accidents in the U.S. between 1983 and 2000 involving at least one fatality or serious injury in which aircraft were substantially damaged. In the 568 such mishaps studied by the Board, 95.7 percent of the accident aircraft occupants lived.
In an effort to increase convenience, safety and efficiency, Aircraft Belts and Signature Plating have formed a strategic partnership called Air Funnel. According to an Aircraft Belts spokesperson, the new partnership allows consumers to consolidate plating and restraint service requirements, resulting in better turnaround time.
The FAA has approved the new AmSafe Aviation child aviation restraint system (Cares), a lightweight harness device designed for children weighing 22 to 44 pounds.
