The FAA has withdrawn its decade-old proposal to rescind its requirement for Mode-S transponders and, consequently, plans to end the hundreds of Mode-S installation exemptions currently in effect. Beginning March 1, 2007, the FAA has proposed that it will no longer allow exempted Part 121 and 135 operators to fly without a Mode-S transponder.

Europe’s ambitious program to introduce mode-S surveillance datalink technology has once again been rescheduled to account for operational and technical difficulties. On January 13, Eurocontrol announced a “rationalization” of the implementation timetable for mode-S elementary (ELS, known in North America as “upgraded mode-S”) and enhanced (EHS) surveillance for IFR flights in general air traffic (IFR/GAT).

ExxonMobil’s Avitat FBO network has adopted Megadata’s Passur FBO software suite to help track and serve Avitat customers. The Passur Avitat Networking software suite was developed exclusively for the Avitat network. Avitat FBOs will be able to use the Passur system to track customer aircraft, view data on aircraft flying into their airports and look up information about the owners of tracked aircraft.
The Asia/Pacific region is pioneering the large-scale deployment of automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B), a technology that promises to replace the traditional secondary surveillance radars (SSR) which are commonly used to track en-route air traffic and supplement the information provided by primary radars in terminal areas.
The FAA recently added new Safety Logic runway incursion alerting technology to its ASDE-X airport surveillance equipment at Orlando International Airport in Florida. ASDE-X combines radar scanning with a transponder tracking system to provide controllers with a real-time picture of airborne and airport surface traffic.
