GA Innovation China has passed its audit by the Aviation Suppliers Association (ASA) and its quality system is accredited and able to operate to ASA-100 in the People’s Republic of China. A joint venture between Air China and GA Telesis, GA Innovation China serves hundreds of aviation maintenance organizations supporting Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, McDonnell Douglas and Embraer aircraft and components as well as CFM International, General Electric, Honeywell, International Aero Engines, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce jet engines and components.
The FAA has proposed levying a $304,000 civil penalty against Cheyenne, Wyo.-based Great Lakes Aviation for allegedly conducting 19 flights following improper application of de-icing fluid. The FAA maintains that Great Lakes flew Beech 1900Ds out of Hays, Kan., in January 2011 with de-icing fluid that exceeded the maximum temperature of 180 degrees F. The Great Lakes de-icing manual states that fluid heated to more than 180 degrees could damage the aircraft or the de-icer.
Great Lakes had 30 days from receipt of the FAA’s December 2 enforcement letter to respond to the agency.
The Regional Airline Association elected new board officers for the 2014-15 term during its fall board meeting at Embraer’s Fort Lauderdale facility on November 20 and 21. Officers include chairman Brad Holt of ExpressJet, vice chairman Bryan Bedford of Republic Airways, treasurer Linda Markham of Cape Air and secretary Rick Leach of Trans States Holdings. The RAA also named Piedmont Airlines president Steve Farrow a member of the executive committee.
Bombardier’s prospects in China brightened considerably last month as the Canadian manufacturer signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Nantong Tongzhou Bay Aviation covering 30 Q400 turboprops and collected a firm order for three CRJ900s from China Express Airlines.
The LOI with Nantong outlines terms for delivery of the turboprops to a new carrier called Sutong Airlines. Based in Nantong in Jiangsu province, the new airline would start service in 2015. Bombardier places the value of the deal at nearly $1 billion based on list prices.
Odyssey Aerospace Components, a cabinetry and interior components manufacturer for Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier and Gulfstream business jets, has been contracted to provide interior work for a Boeing Business Jet customer.
The project includes cabinetry and other interior components for a stateroom, galley, lavatory and other cabin zones. The Denton, Texas-based center, a Greenpoint Technologies property, plans to deliver all elements this year.
The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) issued a new 25-year “roadmap” for the ongoing development, production and use of unmanned aircraft, ground and maritime systems through 2038. The roadmap forecasts that Pentagon spending on unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) will continue growing through 2015; thereafter the rate of spending will decline.
Airbus Defence and Space may be a new brand, but the former defense and space businesses of EADS face a familiar problem: how to remain profitable when European defense budgets are in decline and export competition is intensifying. The combining of Airbus Military, Astrium and Cassidian took effect at the executive level on January 1. Three weeks earlier, a reduction of 5,800 jobs at the new combined division over the next three years was announced.
Lufthansa Technik (LHT) is studying ways to reduce the loads imposed on a bizliner’s interior walls and their structural attachments by a sudden drop in cabin pressure. The solution appears to lie in installing large cutouts in the walls and floor.
The FAA is reissuing and revising a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SW-08-03R4) covering recommendations for rotorcraft powered by turboshaft engines flying into snowy or icy conditions. The SAIB describes procedures to reduce the probability of an uncommanded in-flight engine shutdown due to snow and/or ice ingestion and reminds operators that most helicopters are not approved/equipped for flight into icing conditions.
General Dynamics made some changes to its subsidiary leadership. Jason Aiken, previously senior v-p and CFO of Gulfstream, has been promoted to General Dynamics CFO. He replaces L. Hugh Redd, who is retiring. Daniel Clare, formerly president of Jet Aviation, succeeds Aiken. Robert Smith was promoted from Jet Aviation’s CFO to president.
