Agents of the FBI entered the administrative offices of Grand Junction Regional Airport on November 7 and seized approximately 100 boxes of airport records dating from 2009 to the present. To date, neither the bureau nor the U.S. District Attorney’s Office has given a reason, and a federal judge has sealed court records of what airport authorities assume is a federal investigation.

NoJetsTO, a grassroots anti-airport movement around Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport (CYTZ), packed a July 2 airport executive committee meeting to tell Toronto’s mayor they oppose opening the airport to jets, a move that also requires Runway 8/26 be extended to accommodate those aircraft. The airport currently does not accept jet aircraft. The move began not long after Porter Airlines announced a conditional purchase order for Bombardier CSeries jets.
FBO chain operator Landmark Aviation shored up its operations in Canada with the appointment of Andrew Storey as Canada area manager. In addition to his continuing role as general manager of the company’s Toronto Pearson International Airport location, Storey will assume overall responsibility for Landmark’s facilities at Vancouver International and Calgary International Airports. An industry veteran of more than 25 years, Storey began his career as a line service technician at Pearson while earning his private pilot certificate.
Air Canada Jazz has signed an MOU with Bombardier that outlines the terms of a firm order for 15 Q400 turboprops, sending a clear signal to rival Porter Airlines of its intention to compete directly on routes from Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport with virtually identical airplanes.
As part of a plan to develop Toronto City Center Airport into a viable commercial hub, the Toronto Port Authority (TPA) has entered negotiations with a local holding company to base a new regional airline at the island airport. Known as Regional Airlines Holding Co. (Regco), the new airline plans to start operations within a year, by which time it plans to inaugurate service to Ottawa, Chicago and New York.
Panama City (Fla.) Airport officials must be pinching themselves to see if they’re dreaming. The lucky Florida group has in hand a funded mandate to design and build an entirely new airport on donated land, nearby but well outside the city limits and with the enthusiastic support of environmentalists.
It took some deft political maneuvering, arm-twisting, wheeling, dealing and more than anything a lot of waiting, but Porter Airlines finally got airborne on October 23 from Toronto’s controversial island airport amid fierce opposition from environmentalists and Air Canada Jazz.
Nav Canada, the nation’s provider of ATC services, plans to start building a new control tower at Toronto Buttonville Municipal Airport this summer. The tower, expected to become operational next June, will be located on the south side of the airport, opposite the side of the existing facility built in 1967.
Air Canada Jazz suspended all service to Toronto City Centre Airport on March 1 after an Ontario Superior Court judge ruled that the airline would have to vacate the premises to make way for Regco Holdings subsidiary Porter Airlines. Jazz sought an injunction from the provincial court to block its eviction from the facilities by the leaseholder, fellow Regco subsidiary City Centre Aviation.
