A BuraqAir Boeing 737 was struck by gunfire April 17 while on final approach to Runway 9 at Libya’s Tripoli International Airport (HLLT). The bullet caused minor damage when it struck a water tank in the aircraft’s forward lavatory. None of the 155 people aboard was reported injured. The flight arrived from Benghazi International Airport (HLLB).

Potential investors in the newly liberated Libya became more nervous last week after learning that an armed militia group had cut through a perimeter fence at Tripoli International Airport (HLLT) in broad daylight. The militia then drove their heavily armed vehicles onto an airport ramp in search of their leader, whom they believed was being held on the field.

A single Dutch child out of 104 occupants survived this morning’s crash of an Afriqiya Airways Airbus A330-200 in Tripoli, Libya, the airline confirmed today. The Airbus, operating scheduled service as Flight 8U771 from Johannesburg to Tripoli, crashed short of the runway on approach at about 6 a.m. local time.

Airbus placed itself in a position to land the first significant civil aircraft order from a Libyan airline in 30 years when it signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday to supply Tripoli’s Afriqiyah Airways with six A320s, three A319s and three A330-200s. The deal also grants the airline options on five A319s and three A330-200s.
