Socata TBM700, Truckee, Calif., Dec. 13, 2009–The turboprop single crashed into woods during a landing attempt at Truckee-Tahoe Airport in fog and light snow. According to the pilot, he determined there was not enough runway left after exiting a fog bank and attempted a go-around. He added power, but the aircraft could not climb above the trees past the departure end of Runway 28.
The airplane was destroyed, but the pilot and five passengers escaped serious injury March 13 (no, it wasn’t a Friday) when their King Air E90 crashed into the roof of a two-story electronics company building about half a mile south of Reno/Tahoe (Nev.) International Airport in IMC after diverting from the original destination of Truckee, Calif. The crash sheared the nose from the airplane, and a severed wing and engine fell to the ground.
Bombardier Learjet 35A, Truckee, Calif., Dec. 28, 2005 – The NTSB blamed the pilot’s inadequate compensation for the gusty crosswind (20 to 30 knots) and failure to maintain an adequate airspeed while making a circling instrument approach and maneuvering in a steep turn close to the ground for the fatal crash of the Learjet 35.
The de-icing contractor at California’s Truckee-Tahoe Airport (TRK) recently quit providing services, and the airport reports that it is unlikely any de-icing will be available in the foreseeable future. An airport spokesman said icing is, indeed, an important safety consideration during the winter months and encourages operators to closely evaluate the weather.
Bombardier Learjet 35, Truckee, Calif., Dec. 28, 2005–The two pilots on board the Learjet were killed when it crashed short of the runway when landing at Truckee-Tahoe Airport. Winds were 20 knots; light rain and mist were reported. The Learjet was on an IFR flight plan from Twin Falls, Idaho. The last radio contact was 15 miles northwest of Truckee.
