A company that supplies high-tech, fault-resistant databus components for the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 has launched a research project aimed at bringing low-cost fly-by-wire flight control systems to light general aviation airplanes.

An ad that carmaker Audi began running on radio stations in select cities last month  proclaims that the German company’s automobiles “now feature the same technology as jet aircraft.” While that claim may straddle the border between fact and embellishment, later this decade Audi cars and jets may indeed share the same electronics.

“It’s not a special process and we are following the same principles that we would for a small aircraft. The physics are the same,” said Dr. Norbert Lohl, certification director for the European Aviation Safety Agency, giving a somewhat modest assessment of the task his team has taken on to approve the world’s largest commercial airliner, the Airbus A380.
