Six Aeroflot flight instructors have qualified in the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) after undergoing 40 days of training at the manufacturer’s Zhukovsky base near Moscow. A Tupolev Tu-154 operated by Iran’s Caspian Airlines crashed today near the city of Qazvin in northwestern Iran, killing all 168 people on board, according to country’s official state news service. The Russian-built airliner, one of five Tu-154Ms operated by the airline, crashed just before noon local time, 16 minutes after taking off from its base at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport on a flight to the Armenian capital Yerevan.
At 11:35 p.m. on July 1, two transport-category aircraft collided over the northern shore of Lake Constance near the town of Ueberlingen, Germany, at the Swiss border. Sixty-nine passengers and crew aboard a Tupolev Tu-154M owned and operated by Bashkirian Airlines (BAC) were killed when it collided with DHL Flight 611, a scheduled cargo flight in a Boeing 757-200 freighter. Swiss police have in custody a man accused of stabbing to death an air traffic controller. The man reportedly lost his wife and children in the midair collision of a DHL Boeing 757 and a Bashkirian Airlines Tupolev Tu-154 on the night of July 1, 2002. The controller had been handling traffic in the airspace where the collision occurred.
