Dassault Falcon 900B, Gatwick, UK, Jan. 20, 2007–The UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has ruled the probable cause of the uncontained engine failure was the fracturing of a stage-two low-pressure (LP) turbine blade due to a casting defect, with the possibility that this was caused by a third-stage blade failure.
The FAA has issued an airworthiness directive (AD) effective Aug. 13, 2009, for Pratt & Whitney Canada PW305As and PW305Bs installed on, but not limited to, Bombardier Learjet 60s and Hawker 1000s. The AD stems from mandatory continuing airworthiness information (MCAI) to identify and correct an unsafe condition on an aviation product.
GE Aviation and NASA are to ground test five sets of new subscale blades for open-rotor engines at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The tests will focus on acoustics and efficiency of a two-stage counter-rotating fan. The two partners have high expectations that new analysis tools will add to their understanding of the fan’s aerodynamics.
Chromalloy CF6 gas turbine blades have reached the 10,000 flight-hour mark for the first time with an unidentified major airline. The blades are produced by BELAC, Chromalloy’s joint venture with various commercial carriers who are attempting to avoid the high cost of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) blades by using alternative parts manufacturer approval (PMA) blades.
Chromalloy (Hall 3 Stand A33) has announced that the U.S. Air Force has selected it to provide module repairs during maintenance on the F108 gas turbine engine that powers the KC135R tanker aircraft. The follow-on award, valued at $15.8 million plus options, brings the total value of the contract to approximately $38 million over three years.

McDonnell Douglas MD 600, San Clemente, Calif., Feb. 19, 2009– The U.S. Customs and Border Protection MD 600 autorotated to a forced landing on the beach after the crew heard a loud “bang” and warning lights came on. A main rotor blade severed the tail boom. Examination of the engine showed that both engine chip detector plugs were contaminated with metal particles. The No. 4 turbine wheel was damaged.

Dallas-based Avatas Aerospace, an FAA-approved repair station specializing in the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A, has acquired Hyannis, Mass.-based Prime Turbines. Prime Turbines’ services include hot section inspections; power section and gas generator repair; and fuel nozzle and bleed valve overhaul and exchange for PT6 engines. Prime Turbines is also an authorized distributor of FAA PMA parts for PT6 hot sections.
