Al Bateen Executive Airport, the Gulf Region’s only dedicated business aviation airport, saw 1,903 movements in the third quarter, a 12-percent increase from the same period a year ago. The fastest growing traffic segment in the quarter at Al Bateen was visiting aircraft operations, which soared by 42 percent, to 202 movements. It expects strong growth in traffic later this month, when the Abu Dhabi Formula One events will take place.

A new report about global air traffic, released last week by Montreal-based Airports Council International (ACI), shows a strong rebound in 2010 after a two-year industry slump, as passenger traffic rose last year by 6.6 percent and topped the 5 billion mark for the first time. The cargo business also recorded record volumes, growing by 15.3 percent, to 91 million metric tons, according to the report.

Emirates Airline has announced it will open an engine overhaul shop slated to complement its test cell in Dubai. The $120 million facility will be located on approximately 22.3 acres of land. Emirates plans to break ground by next year’s first quarter, with the facility expected to begin service by the fourth quarter of 2014.

In the continuing development of Al Bateen Executive Airport into a dedicated business aviation hub, the Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), owner of the airport, and Jet Aviation Group signed a lease agreement at EBACE yesterday that will make the aviation services company the first independent MRO provider on the field.

The biennial Dubai Airshow, to be held from November 13 to 17 at the Dubai Airport Expo, is expected to draw as many as 1,000 exhibitors from more than 50 countries and attract more than 55,000 trade visitors. At the 2009 event, business aircraft accounted for roughly a quarter of all the aircraft on display, and the organizers expect similar numbers this year, with business aircraft accounting for 40 of the expected 140 on static display.
