London is one of the world’s most crowded and congested cities, but business aircraft operators flying to the British capital are spoiled for choice when it comes to landing options. Representatives from several of these airports and FBOs have made the trip here to Orlando to state their case for being NBAA showgoers’ home away from home on the other side of the Atlantic.

With a three-foot wider interior than the Bombardier Challenger 604, the Avro 146/RJ is claimed to offer “an airliner-size cabin for the price of a small business jet.”
Here at the NBAA Convention, BAe Regional Aircraft (Booth No. 1881) hopes to renew interest in the Avro Business Jet (ABJ) version of the venerable quadjet, which was produced from 1983 to 2002.

In a welcome development for operators who are flying VIP-converted Jetstream J31/J32s, UK-based Saywell International (Booth No. 1805) became the sole spares distribution center for the BAE Systems-built airplanes this year and is rapidly increasing its support capabilities.

Signature Flight Support (Booth No. 3600) has increased its European network of FBOs to 23 bases with the September 12 takeover of Interflight Executive Aircraft Services at London Gatwick Airport. The company now controls the only FBO at Gatwick through the acquisition of Interflight’s parent company Southern Aero Services.

Signature Flight Support has increased its European network of FBOs to 23 bases with the September 12 takeover of Interflight Executive Aircraft Services at London Gatwick Airport. The company now controls the only FBO at Gatwick through the acquisition of Interflight’s parent company, Southern Aero Services. According to Signature parent company BBA Aviation, the deal was valued at £4.5 million ($7.9 million), debt free.

In October, PremiAir will move into a newly refurbished hangar at Oxford Airport near London. PremiAir announced in May a plan to move its fixed-wing maintenance base from company headquarters at Blackbushe Airport in Surrey to Oxford because of lack of growth capacity at Blackbushe and the airport’s relatively short runway.

BAE Systems Regional Aircraft this year will deliver six more of its corporate-configured, four-engine Avro RJs for a variety of business and government operations. Some 23 of the rebranded Avro Business Jets are already in service or undergoing conversion from their original role as regional airliners, with much of the work being done by Inflite Engineering Services at London Stansted Airport.

After a year in which the BAE Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft has received unprecedented negative publicity in the UK, it’s hardly surprising that BAE Systems and the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) are not showing the new MRA.4 version here at Farnborough. Four years after it first flew, the Nimrod MRA.4 has still not made a public debut.

A year ago The Portal opened its doors. The facility, located at QinetiQ’s Cody Technology Park site on the north side of Farnborough airfield, is an advanced experimentation and analysis suite. Established by Boeing in partnership with QinetiQ, The Portal draws on advanced simulation techniques, virtual operations and the insertion of live operations to run complex scenarios to aid a variety of functions.

QinetiQ looks set to build on solid successes in the U.S. market with further acquisitions in the country. Recent end-of-year results have shown good growth in the U.S. companies already in the QinetiQ fold, with particular strength in the robotics sector, led by the Talon bomb disposal robot used in Iraq and Afghanistan.
