Sikorsky and the Tata Group have signed an agreement for the Indian enterprise to build cabins for the S-92 helicopter. Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. will establish a new facility at a greenfield site in Hyderabad, and is due to begin deliveries from late 2010.
The downturn in demand in some of its markets has not dented the ardor of engine maker Pratt & Whitney for developing new technology. “We have to be ready for the upturn,” said the U.S. company’s new president, David Hess. “We have to keep people focused on the great future of Pratt & Whitney, positioning ourselves for a strong recovery.”
Last month Sikorsky displayed a mock-up of a possible X2 Light Tactical Helicopter

BBA Aviation ERO (engine repair and overhaul) is expanding its global reach. The parent company of Dallas Airmotive, H+S Aviation and Premier Turbines has extended its international service support network with the opening of regional centers in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Mumbai, India. The centers will provide service to include troubleshooting, parts support, borescope inspection and on-wing hot section inspection and repair.
Sikorsky Aircraft subsidiary Schweizer Aircraft has signed a deal with Phoenix Heliparts appointing the company a factory-authorized aircraft sales distributor and service center for the line of Schweizer commercial helicopters.
A recently released FAA proposal would amend FAR Part 34 fuel venting and exhaust emission requirements for turbine-powered airplanes, proposing new, tighter emission standards for engines manufactured after Dec. 31, 2003. Engines that entered production before that date will be grandfathered and exempt from the new standards.
United Technologies last month announced it will lay off 11,600 employees over the next two years. How these cuts will affect aerospace divisions Pratt & Whitney, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Sikorsky and Hamilton Sundstrand was not reported. However, P&WC said it isn’t planning any more layoffs than the 1,000 it announced in January.
Sikorsky yesterday announced the formation of Sikorsky Global Helicopters, a new umbrella business unit for the manufacturer’s commercial helicopters, including the S-76, S-92, H-92 and the Schweizer helicopter line. As part of the rebranding, the S-300c, S-300CBi, S-333 and S-434 will be marketed as Sikorsky helicopters. “The Schweizer name will disappear,” said Marc Poland, executive vice president of the new business unit.

Pratt & Whitney Canada’s prospects in the business jet and general aviation markets remain bright despite the air of economic uncertainty stemming from the U.S. investment industry crisis, according to senior company officials.
