Customers in Southern California now have another option for their Pratt & Whitney Canada overhaul and repair services. Carlsbad, Calif.-based Jet Source, based at McClellan-Palomar Airport, is now able to service and supply components for engines manufactured by Pratt & Whitney Canada.
Schweizer Aircraft (Booth No. 2040) yesterday unveiled the Sikorsky Schweizer 434, the company’s first new product since Sikorsky purchased the New York-based OEM in 2004. The Model 434 is a single-turbine helicopter designed primarily for flight training, law enforcement and light utility missions.
Sikorsky Aircraft yesterday unveiled its X2 technology demonstrator here at Heli-Expo, with hordes of attendees surrounding the black-shrouded helicopter before it was revealed in a cloud of smoke and lights at the company’s booth (No. 1641). What emerged was a sleek-looking, two-pilot ship with a contra-rotating coaxial main rotor and an “aero propeller” in place of the tail rotor.
Pratt & Whitney Canada’s helicopter turboshaft engine business has enjoyed
an unprecedented surge in recent years, thanks in part to the company’s development work on turbofan engines for business jets, company executives said.
Bringing to reality a deal announced at Heli-Expo last year, Shanghai Sikorsky Aircraft Co. (SSAC) has received business license approval from Chinese authorities, authorizing the light-helicopter manufacturing company to commence operations. The result will be a new line of light helicopters built in China, all of them license-built editions of existing Schweizer designs.
Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) has added 200 production workers and is opening a new assembly line for the PT6T TwinPac, the engines that power the Bell 212 and 412, at its Saint-Hubert, Quebec plant. The Saint-Hubert facility will also continue to operate as a major overhaul and repair facility.
Schweizer Aircraft and Jeppesen have updated the training manuals and materials for the Schweizer 300C and 300CBi. Jeppesen first developed manuals for the type in 1980 when it collaborated on the private/commercial helicopter manual with Hughes, the original owner of the Model 300’s type certificate. A decade ago Schweizer and Jeppesen decided jointly to update the original Hughes curriculum.
Sikorsky president Steve Finger said that Schweizer’s “ability for rapid prototyping makes the company an excellent choice for advanced concept evaluation and its focus on product safety aligns well with our own.” In fact, Schweizer is such a good match for Sikorsky that Finger bought the company. Pratt & Whitney Canada is seeing its engines enter service on three new business airplanes this year–the Dassault Falcon 7X, Cessna Mustang and Eclipse 500–and the powerhouse has made it a priority to advance support activities that previously would have been spread over a longer time, Maria Della Posta, vice president of customer support, told NBAA Convention News.
Sikorsky Aircraft yesterday disclosed at the American Helicopter Society International annual technical forum in Grapevine, Texas, plans to build and test a demonstrator for a new class of coaxial helicopters that will have improved vertical flight capabilities and will cruise at 250 knots.
