Universal Avionics has completed helicopter vibration testing and approval for its UniLink UL-800/801 communications management unit (CMU), expanding the company’s line of products designed for the helicopter market. The UniLink UL-800/801 is an ACARS-compatible CMU that includes digital ATIS, pre-departure clearance, aircraft tracking, messaging, weather information and graphics. The system is also provisioned for the Aeronautical Telecommunications Network, providing a platform for future compliance with emerging datalink requirements.

Universal Avionics announced a new extended warranty program for owners of Universal products this week at the Aircraft Electronics Association convention in Las Vegas. The new FlightAssure program is available after expiration of the original two-year warranty and for most older Universal avionics units.

Customers have been asking for extended warranties, according to director of product support Andy Seaton. “They want stability in operating costs. Costly repairs might not be budgeted, and this way they don’t have to worry about a surprise.”

Universal Avionics announced at Heli-Expo ‘13 the recent completion of helicopter vibration testing and approval for its airborne datalink system, the UniLink UL-800/801 communications management unit (CMU), expanding the company’s line of products designed for the helicopter market. Attendees can view and operate the unit at the company’s exhibit (Booth No. C2401).

Today at Heli-Expo, MD Helicopters unveiled its Next Generation Cockpit for the MD Explorer, featuring an integrated, single-pilot IFR-capable flight deck from Universal Avionics. The basic system has a two-screen display, with an optional third screen available for the copilot’s position, and is controlled via a center-panel-mounted CDU or via a cursor controlled by a point-and-click button mounted on the cyclic.

The latest upgrade in Duncan Aviation’s “Glass Box” project is a Falcon 900B retrofitted with a full Universal Avionics LCD glass cockpit, replacing the original Honeywell SPZ-8000 cathode-ray-tube displays.

The upgrade includes five Universal EFI-890R LED-backlit LCDs, engine indicating system replacing the original engine instruments, dual Universal UNS-1Fw flight management systems with Waas/LPV/satellite-based augmentation system capability and dual Vision 1 computers delivering synthetic vision on the primary displays.

Mid-Canada Mod Center of Toronto recently installed a Universal Avionics FMS upgrade in Advanced Aerospace Solutions’s Piaggio Avanti human-factors research platform. The new FMS allows AdvAero test pilots to fly LPV Rnav global navigation satellite system approaches. Other FMS features include dedicated direct-to function, FMS heading function, PVOR tracking, Vnav and user-defined holding patterns. The installation also added an LP/LPV monitor, which “provides monitoring and positioning information for Rnav (GNSS) approaches with LPV minimums,” according to Universal Avionics.

Operators flying aircraft equipped with Universal Avionics flight management systems will soon be able to enjoy improved flight efficiency thanks to Universal’s new FlexPerf Trip Performance module. The module will be available for Universal Waas/Sbas FMSs (and also Waas/Sbas-capable military Multi-Mission Management Systems). FlexPerf will be available with the next major software release in the first quarter of 2013.

EFI-890R display

Universal Avionics has begun deliveries of its UniLink UL-800/UL-801 communications management unit, which provides airborne datalink capability that meets upcoming mandates in European and North Atlantic airspace. The UL800/801 received FAA TSO approval in April, and Universal’s Tucson, Ariz., manufacturing facility is already producing the units to meet market demand.

Universal Avionics (Stand 639) has contributed a UniLink UL-800/801 communications management system for installation in a Swiss-based Bombardier Challenger CL-601 that frequently travels along North Atlantic tracks helping to test the Future Air Navigation System (Fans), which is beginning to be utilized by Eurocontrol. The UniLink box is in full compliance with Fans standards.
