This year’s keynote speaker at the 3rd annual Tampa Bay Aviation Association (TBAA) Safety Standdown is US Airways flight attendant Doreen Welsh, one of the cabin crew aboard Flight 1549 when it ditched in the frigid waters of the Hudson River in January 2009. Other presentations at the April 17 event will cover human factors and loss of control, as well as an introduction to the Tampa International Airport aircraft firefighting and rescue team. The event begins at 7:45 a.m.
In a report released Thursday, the NTSB reported that no lives were lost in U.S. airline accidents in 2011. The total number of deaths in aviation did rise, however, with most of those occurring in general aviation, where the number grew to 491 in 2011 from 476 the year before.

Preliminary Report: Cause of Turboprop Ditching Still Unknown
The NTSB announced the promotion of John DeLisi to director of the agency’s office of aviation safety (OAS) today. He will assume his new position on June 2, following the retirement of current director Tom Haueter. DeLisi has bees the OAS’s deputy director since 2007.
A new year brings new wishes for aviation safety. Or, in some cases, a renewal of old wishes from years past. It’s no small feat to strive to constantly improve an already enviable aviation safety record. But strive we must if we are to eliminate potential safety problems that in the right combination could bring down an aircraft or otherwise come together to cause injury or loss of life.
The NTSB has launched an investigation into a near midair between an Airbus A320 airliner and a Beech 99 cargo airplane near Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. According to the Safety Board, the two airplanes came within 50 to 100 feet of colliding during the September 16 incident.
Although the outcome of US Airways Flight 1549 could not have been much better, the accident nevertheless prompted the National Transportation Safety Board to issue 33 recommendations to U.S. and European aviation authorities and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
