Air traffic controllers at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) are already hailing the airport movement area safety system (Amass) as an aviation success story after it alerted them to a potentially hazardous situation involving a business jet and a regional airliner on one of SFO’s runways.
The NTSB last month announced an investigation into a May 26 incident at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in which two regional airliners came within 50 feet of colliding. At about 1:30 p.m. the tower air traffic controller cleared SkyWest Airlines Flight 5741, an Embraer Brasilia arriving from Modesto, Calif., to land on Runway 28R.
The National Transportation Safety Board last week issued its final report on a February 21 accident at Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport in which a Learjet 55, landing in extreme adverse weather conditions, ran off the end of the runway. Witnesses said that seconds after landing, the aircraft encountered “a wall of water” produced by a severe microburst.
