Bill Cutter, Madison Cutter and Will Cutter put a bow on Cutter Aviation’s year-long 85th birthday celebration yesterday at the service provider’s booth (No. 9616). The company is the oldest and largest family-owned FBO chain in the U.S., operating nine bases in five states. Its most recent opened over the summer at Van Nuys Airport, Los Angeles.
Clay Lacy Aviation (Booth No. N5115) has added 15 more aircraft to its managed and charter fleets so far in the second half of 2013. The Van Nuys, Calif.-based company said that the additions represent the highest rates of growth in those fleets since the company was founded in 1968 and suggested that it is a strong signal of a resurgent business jet market, especially in Southern California.
NBAA announced that its 2014 Business Aviation Regional Forums will be held at airports in Florida, California and Texas. On Jan. 30, 2014, Signature Flight Support will host a regional forum at Boca Raton (Fla.) Airport. A second regional forum at Van Nuys (Calif.) Airport will be co-hosted by Maguire Aviation (to be acquired by Signature, pending antitrust approvals) and TWC Aviation on June 26. Business Jet Center at Dallas Love Field will host the third forum next September 18.
The FBO community at California’s Van Nuys Airport, one of the most heavily used business aviation fields in the U.S., is seeing some upheaval with the announcement this morning that Signature Flight Support parent company BBA Aviation will acquire Maguire Aviation’s two FBOs at Van Nuys for $69 million. Subject to antitrust approvals, the deal is expected to be completed by year-end.
Cutter Aviation began operating its FBO at Van Nuys Airport yesterday. Cutter is operating the facility under a long-term management agreement with facility owner and legendary airshow pilot Bob Hoover. Pentastar Aviation previously operated the FBO. Tom Magglos, who used to manage the former Petersen Aviation FBO on the south side of Van Nuys Airport, is managing the new Cutter operation, which will undergo a multimillion-dollar renovation.
The Aircraft Mechanics Program at Southern California’s Van Nuys Airport, a vital part of the local aviation community for more than 30 years, was almost forced to close its doors this year when its rent rose to $12,000 per month. Established by the Los Angeles Unified School District, and run by the district’s North Valley Occupational Center, the school trains nearly 200 students a year in airframe and powerplant maintenance.
An FAA supplemental type certificate (STC) issued to Trolltune promises to help operators of Gulfstream IIBs and GIIIs fly within strict noise limits at Van Nuys Airport (VNY) in Southern California. The STC isn’t a Stage 3 hush kit, explained Trolltune president Tom Storli, but limits maximum takeoff weight to 64,000 pounds, thus cutting takeoff noise by three decibels–to 79.8 from 82.8–enough to meet the new Van Nuys limit of 80 dBA. This limit is a City of Los Angeles ordinance that takes effect on January 1 next year.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) North Valley Occupational Center/Aviation Center will continue to operate its training program at a leased Van Nuys facility, now that the FAA has confirmed that its $1-per-year lease is permitted by agency guidelines. The current lease expires on June 30.
The announcement follows months of behind-the-scenes negotiations led by LAUSD board member Nury Martinez, Rep. Tony Cardenas (D-Van Nuys) and others to retain the LAUSD Aviation Center at Van Nuys Airport, where the lease cost had outstripped the school’s budget.
