Tenants at Van Nuys Airport (VNY) in Southern California are upset that their rental rates keep increasing while the California economy continues to deteriorate, airport businesses close or move away and operations at the airport decline.

FBO chain Castle & Cooke Aviation has signed a 30-year lease at Van Nuys Airport in southern California with Los Angeles World Airports, which confers full-service FBO status to the company. Castle & Cooke has offered hangar space at Van Nuys for 30 years, and has had its own fuel farm, but until the recent agreement wasn’t allowed to sell fuel to transient customers.
Los Angeles Worlds Airports (LAWA) first proposed phasing out jets that meet Stage 2 noise restrictions at Van Nuys Airport in 1990. According to NBAA, new efforts by LAWA to implement that phase-out must be subject to FAA review or approval because too much time has passed since the proposal was originally floated in 1990.
On Friday, the City of Santa Monica’s longstanding effort to ban category C and D aircraft from operating into Santa Monica Airport was again blocked, this time by an FAA hearing officer who ruled on the FAA Part 16 dispute between the city and the FAA.
Hawker Beechcraft Services will become the second major business jet OEM service center to leave California when it closes its Van Nuys Airport facility on March 31. Last year, Cessna Aircraft announced that it is closing its Long Beach service center and moving those operations to a new facility in Mesa, Ariz.
Two new maintenance facilities have joined the Crownair Aviation portfolio: RoigWest Maintenance, a turbine aircraft maintenance service and support center at Van Nuys Airport, and West Coast Jet Services at McClellan Palomar Airport (CRQ), which will now be known as Crownair Aviation-CRQ.
Charter/management firm TWC Aviation has moved into its new facility at Van Nuys Airport in southern California. Previously, TWC was headquartered in a 7,000-sq-ft office at Burbank Glendale Pasadena Airport. The new combination hangar/office building includes 18,000 sq ft of office space and a 45,000-sq-ft hangar that can accommodate any size business jet.
Van Nuys Airport last month introduced a draft environmental impact report for the proposed Noisier Aircraft Phaseout Project. The preliminary plan calls for establishing a maximum noise level for arriving and departing aircraft at Van Nuys, beginning with a phase-out of aircraft generating noise levels of 77 dBA or more on departure.
San Diego-based Crownair has acquired RoigWest Maintenance, a turbine aircraft maintenance and support center at Van Nuys Airport, the third busiest general aviation airport in the world, as well as West Coast Jet Services at McClellan Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, Calif. West Coast Jet Services will now be known as Crownair Aviation CRQ. Crownair plans to expand to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona by 2010.
AIC, the Aircraft Institute for Craftsmen, is scheduled to open its doors next spring to train executive interiors specialists. According to founder Pierre Moroni, president of Syncro Aircraft Interiors at Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles, the motivation for launching the school is the persistent, industry-wide problem of finding skilled interiors technicians.
