Camarillo Airport in Southern California is one of those airports that reveals its treasures as visitors either drive or fly in, starting with the hulk of an ancient Convair CV-240–used for firefighting training–in a field on the east side.

The former Oxnard Aircraft and Jet Center celebrated its addition to the Million Air chain at a grand-opening party on September 17. Located about halfway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, Oxnard Airport (OXR) has a 5,950-foot Runway 7/25 with ILS, GPS and VOR approaches.
Fractional share operator Avantair opened its second FBO, in Camarillo, Calif., on August 6. The operator’s first FBO is in Clearwater, Fla. The newly built Camarillo facility, led by general manager Joe Enderle and customer service manager Ginger Goodspeed, offers an alternative to crowded Los Angeles-area airports such as Van Nuys and Santa Monica.
During the Cold War in the 1950s, squadrons of North American F-86 Sabres and, later, F-100 Super Sabres stood guard over the West Coast secreted in hangars at what is now Camarillo Airport (CMA), Calif. Alex Fisher, v-p of operations for Sun Air Jets at the airport, said, “There’s a lot of history here. The pilots would sleep in their flight suits and had to be ready to take off in four minutes.
“Without a doubt, DuPage Airport [DPA] is the premier corporate aviation airport in the Midwest–both land and air side,” David Bird, executive director of the DuPage Airport Authority (DAA) in West Chicago, told AIN. “It’s not idle boasting; we can facilitate air traffic and still be a good neighbor in the community. Those are two key ingredients in the success of any airport.”
