Responding to customer input, Verizon Airfone said it will continue providing MagnaStar phone users with air-to-ground communications “through at least Dec. 31, 2007.” This action reverses a Verizon decision this summer to exit the air-to-ground phone business on December 4, an action that would have left some 4,100 Teledyne Control MagnaStar users without service.

The total 4-MHz slice of frequency spectrum that was the subject of the FCC’s 800-MHz auction is the same spectrum that has been allocated for air-to-ground calling for the last 20 years. The original idea was for as many as five competitors to offer air-to-ground calling services in flight, but only three players eventually emerged–and none was able to make money.

AirCell’s winning bid of $31.319 million for an important segment of the air-to-ground frequency spectrum last month bodes well for business jet operators and passengers, who stand to benefit from access to high-speed-data services available across the U.S. over a network of special ground towers.

Verizon has sent notices to current MagnaStar air-to-ground customers informing them that it intends to shut down the service on December 4. In the letter, Verizon said it is exploring the sale of its general aviation business.

It didn’t take long for Iridium resellers to start targeting MagnaStar customers after Verizon Airfone’s July announcement that it plans to exit the general aviation business. AirCell last month introduced Axxess EZ, a two-channel Iridium satcom system that is intended as a direct replacement for the old MagnaStar phones.
