The FAA has awarded an initial $20.5 million contract to ITT Industries aerospace/communications division to provide the agency with multimode VHF digital air-to-ground radios as part of its next-generation air/ground communications system (Nexcom). Beginning this month, 22 additional European countries require all aircraft entering their airspace above FL 245 to be equipped with 8.33-kHz VHF radios. In addition, current exemptions to the requirement already in effect in seven other European countries will not be extended and no new exemptions will be approved.
The companies have deployed new VHF air-ground stations to cover the airspace at Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne airports. The launch represents Arinc’s first GlobaLink VHF coverage on the continent, according to a spokesman. Arinc and AeroThai currently operate more than 40 GlobaLink stations providing communications across the Asia-Pacific region. Each ground station supports several hundred sq mi of airspace.
