Viking Air (Chalet CD39) revealed here at the show yesterday that it had sold eight of its new $7 million Twin Otter Series 400 turboprops. Two will go to Papua New Guinea’s OK Tedi Development Corp., while the other six will go to Turkey’s Seabird Airlines as the floatplane variant. Viking launched the new DHC-6 Twin Otter Series 400 production program in 2007 and now has an order backlog worth $350 million.
When the Singapore Airshow was last held two years ago, Canadian airframer Viking Air had yet to receive certification for its Twin Otter 400, the twin-engine turboprop formerly produced by de Havilland Canada (DHC) and a continuation of the series that ceased production in 1988. Today the British Columbia-based manufacturer will hand over its ninth production model to Papua New Guinea-based OK Tedi Mining at a ceremony at its chalet (39).
Engineering modification house Ikhana Aircraft Services (Booth No. C7116) expected to receive FAA supplemental type certification (STC) of its DH-6 Twin Otter fuselage life extension by the time the NBAA show began, adding to a range of other upgrades the company offers for the twin-engine turboprop.
The resurrected Twin Otter Series 400 received Transport Canada certification in late July after three years of work by Viking Air. The first 400 to be delivered was handed over to Switzerland’s Zimex Aviation at the Farnborough airshow in July.
Canadian company Viking Air and Moscow-based Vityaz Avia Corp. have signed a memorandum of understanding for the potential development of a final assembly facility in eastern Russia for the new Twin Otter 400.

Viking Air (Booth No. 983) has appointed Team JAS of Jacksonville, Florida, and Universal Avionique of Miami, Florida, as its first two factory-endorsed component centers (FECC) for the Twin Otter Series 400 and legacy de Havilland Canada aircraft.
Viking Air is close to achieving European and Canadian certification of its new Twin Otter 400, having made a first flight with the revamped, 21-century version of the classic twin turboprop design in February. U.S. certification is due to follow by the end of this year.
