CAE has been selected by Bombardier to provide engineering services and a flight simulator for the C Series narrowbody aircraft. The Canadian company will supply a so-called augmented engineering environment, which includes test support equipment under the hardware-in-the-loop concept. The idea is to have the tested system “believe” it is in a real aircraft.

China’s Xi’an Aviation Science and Technology Company (XASC) has awarded Rockwell Collins a contract to develop a simulation and training program for the Xi’an Aircraft (XAC) MA-60 and MA-600 regional turboprops. Under the terms of the agreement, Rockwell Collins will use its CORE simulation architecture to supply key components of the MA-60 full-flight simulator and the MA-600 training device.

Forty of FlightSafety International’s full flight simulators located at 15 learning centers in North America have been qualified under the EASA flight simulator training device catch-up process. The process was developed to qualify simulators located outside of EASA member states’ jurisdiction so they can continue to be used in the training of European-licensed flight crews under EASA regulations.

Eurocopter (Booth No. 7010) and Thales will design and build the first-ever simulator for the medium-weight, twin-engine Dauphin AS 365 N3 helicopter for Héli-Union of France. Expected to be operational beginning in 2011 at Héli-Union’s training center in Angoulême, the simulator has the support of Angoulême’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI).

American Eurocopter has signed the first long-term commercial customer for the full-motion EC 135/EC 145 training device at its Grand Prairie, Texas campus. Stat MedEvac will use the simulator to train EC 135 and EC 145 air medical service crews operating in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and the District of Columbia. The U.S. Army began using the simulator last December to train crews for the UH-72A Lakota, an EC 145 variant.

Nearly 50 customers have completed Phenom 100 pilot training at Embraer CAE Flight Training Services, a joint venture between CAE and Embraer, CAE told AIN. In addition, several FAA, EASA and Brazilian ANAC officials have also completed the 14-day Phenom training course, which has been conducted at CAE’s Dallas facility since September.

Lake Charles, La.-based Era Training Center received FAA Part 60 Level 6 qualification for its AS 350B2 flight simulator training device (FSTD). The FSTD, built by Frasca International, offers an exact cockpit replication. Frasca performed flight testing, model development and certification. Era provided the helicopter for flight testing.

Nivisys Industries received the first FAA TSO-C164 approval for its NVAG-6 night-vision aviator goggle. According to Nivisys, it is the first night-vision goggle (NVG) manufacturer to apply for and also first to receive FAA technical standard order (TSO) approval. “Nivisys decided two years ago that aviation safety hinged on FAA-approved NVGs,” said Gary Higman, manager of law enforcement and homeland security programs for Nivisys.
