Recently launched Wingspan Systems of Mission, Kan., is in Orlando this week (Booth 1637) for the debut of its new RampTrack ground accident avoidance warning system. As the name suggests, RampTrack is a ground-based technology to help FBOs and ground-handling personnel avoid aircraft accidents.

Employing its “sensor fusion software,” RampTrack places multiple types of sensors inside hangars and on ramps to detect problems and alert ground crews to the potential for an accident in time to plan for avoidance, both for aircraft being moved and those that are parked.

Industry and government testers plan to demonstrate a detect-and-avoid suite on NASA’s Ikhana air vehicle later this year.

U.S. government and industry testers plan to begin data-gathering flights later this year using a system that will address perhaps the biggest technological hurdle to widespread use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)–the ability of a remotely piloted vehicle to “detect and avoid” (DAA) other aircraft. At the same time, a special committee convened by standards organization RTCA is working toward delivering DAA equipment standards by July 2016.

The FAA approved an STC developed by AeroMech for a Garmin G950 upgrade to the Beechcraft 1900D. AeroMech subsidiary AMI Aviation Services will install the upgraded avionics, or it can be accomplished by qualified Garmin dealers. The G950 system replaces the 1900D’s original Rockwell Collins EFIS 84 avionics and other instruments with the three-display G950 (one 15-inch MFD and two 10.4-inch PFDs), removing about 270 pounds from the airplane’s empty weight.

Cessna Aircraft rolled out the first production Citation CJ3+ today at the company’s manufacturing facility in Wichita. The upgraded twinjet features a new interior with a redesigned cabin and cockpit, new pressurization and new diagnostics systems. It also has a Garmin G3000 avionics suite that includes turbulence detecting weather radar, TCAS II, TAWS and ADS-B capabilities. The CJ3+ was announced on March 20 and it is expected to receive FAA certification in the second half.

NTSB and FAA investigators are initially crediting the traffic alert and collision avoidance system (Tcas) with preventing an April 25 midair between United Airlines and US Airways Boeing 757s while both airliners were under the control of Honolulu ATC center. Both aircraft were flying at FL300 when the Tcas aboard the United aircraft warned the crew to descend. The aircraft reportedly came within 2.2 nm laterally of one another.

MQ-4C Triton

The U.S. Navy has not determined how to fit a “due regard” radar on its unmanned MQ-4C Triton, which will likely start initial operations in 2017 without the subsystem intended to help protect it from midair collisions. But the Triton will enter service with more capability than any other unmanned aircraft to “detect and avoid” other aircraft, the Navy’s program manager asserts.
