Honeywell is testing a new type of automated cockpit concept that can take control of airplanes to keep them from flying into the ground or buildings. Called assisted recovery, the system uses the enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS) and autopilot to steer an airplane away from terrain or obstacles if the pilot has not attempted to do so within five seconds of an EGPWS warning.

At last month’s Paris Air Show, Rockwell Collins announced certification by U.S. and Canadian authorities of the company’s Pro Line 21 cockpit in the super-midsize Bombardier Challenger 300. The flight deck contains four 12- by 10-inch LCDs and integrates a number of advanced technologies, including TCAS II and TAWS, as standard. Options include turbulence-detection weather radar and 3-D FMS navigation maps.

Rockwell Collins vice president and general manager for air transport systems Jeff Standerski and BOC Aviation CEO Robert Martin signed a contract here yesterday that will bring a suite of communications, navigation and surveillance avionics to 47 Airbus A320s due for delivery starting late this year. BOC Aviation is an aircraft leasing firm owned by the Bank of China.

Jet Aviation at Dallas Love Field has received an STC on installation of a Bendix/King IHAS 8000 integrated hazard awareness system on Cessna Citation S550 series aircraft. The IHAS 8000 integrates four safety-oriented avionics systems, including position awareness, weather avoidance, traffic advisories and terrain warning.

Terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) manufacturers being sued for patent infringement by Honeywell have started to fight back. On Monday, Universal Avionics Systems Corp. filed a counterclaim in the U.S. District Court in Delaware alleging that Honeywell is “attempting to monopolize” the TAWS market with its patent lawsuit filed last spring.
