Calgary-based WestJet Encore signed a firm order for five Bombardier Q400s in late July, raising its order total for the type to 30. The latest deal, valued at $167 million, involved the conversion of five options booked by parent company WestJet with its original order for the type in July 2012. Plans call for the airplanes to help support WestJet’s expansion into the eastern part of Canada, where it currently operates a base out of Toronto.
Denver-based air charter firm Mountain Aviation was acquired by an unidentified private investment group earlier this week. Rich Bjelkevig, who founded the turboprop and jet charter firm in 1993, will continue to serve as the company’s president. Cam Kenyon, previously the executive vice president of operations at WestJet Airlines and the president of Lynx Aviation in Denver, has been appointed Mountain Aviation’s executive director.
Canada’s WestJet has signed a letter of intent to buy 40 Boeing 737 Max 8s and 25 Max 7s, the Calgary-based low-fare carrier announced Thursday. The airline said it expects close a definitive purchase agreement with Boeing before September 30 and start taking deliveries in September 2017. Boeing values the order at $6.3 billion based on list prices.
Bombardier delivered the first of 20 Q400 turboprops ordered by Calgary-based low-fare carrier WestJet on June 6. Plans called for WestJet’s new regional subsidiary, WestJet Encore, to start flying the airplanes on June 24 on new routes to Fort St. John and Nanaimo, British Columbia. The airline also plans to launch service to Brandon, Manitoba, on September 3, and open several new points in Alberta and Saskatchewan later in the year.

The Texas gateway is one of only seven airports worldwide to offer more than 200 destinations in its flight schedule. An ostensible change of heart on the part of the chairman of Campinas, Brazil-based low-fare regional airline Azul will allow for the creation of the country’s third largest carrier, pending antitrust authorities’ approval of a plan to merge Azul and fellow Brazilian regional airline Trip.
Calgary, Canada-based low-fare airline WestJet yesterday confirmed that it considering the launch of a new short-haul, regional airline as early as next year, using a fleet of some 40 “smaller” turboprop aircraft.
Canadian air carrier WestJet is the launch customer for StandardAero’s latest expansion. The contract calls for the MRO to work on the CFM56-7B engines for the airline’s 81 Boeing Next Generation 737s; the number of airplanes is expected to reach 135 by 2016. The exclusive 12-year OnPoint contract is valued at more than $850 million.
