Cessna parent Textron said last month that revenue for the Wichita- based manufacturer was up by 15 percent in the second quarter of the year, representing a $198 million increase, to $1.3 billion, compared with the same period last year. Profits for the second quarter were up, too–by $47 million, to $200 million.

Hawker Beechcraft late last month opened its new international sales headquarters at the Hawarden Airport, Broughton, UK. In an unusually poignant example of globalization, the opening means that Hawkers sold in the UK will have come full circle–from wings and fuselage by Airbus UK to final assembly and testing at the company’s Wichita headquarters and finally back to the UK to be sold.

When Cessna opened its new 159,000-sq-ft Orlando Citation Service Center on June 21, the facility became the largest in the company’s service-center network. And with a second construction phase adding another 26,000 sq ft due to be completed early next month, it’s hard to believe that this 185,000-sq-ft complex will no longer hold this distinction by Thanksgiving.

This year will be an eventful one in Wichita as local corporate icons Cessna and Hawker Beechcraft mark big anniversaries. For Cessna, it's been 80 years since Clyde Cessna's “all-purpose” airplane made its first flight. The manufacturer, which has since produced more than 189,000 aircraft, was incorporated in 1927.

Between Raytheon Aircraft becoming Hawker Beechcraft (HB) and delivering the Hawker 4000 and Cessna delivering the Mustang, 2007 is a big year in Wichita. But the two companies are also celebrating multiple birthdays this year.

Don’t expect to see deliveries before 2012 of a new design for a large-cabin Citation based on the mockup shown at the NBAA Convention last year. Cessna is “still studying the business case to determine if it makes sense to go forward,” according to parent company Textron. “Probably be the first quarter of next year before we finally make that decision,” said Campbell.
