Wide Area Augmentation System

The FAA recently passed a major milestone in the move toward NextGen with the implementation of the 1,000th instrument approach that uses the enhanced GPS wide area augmentation system (WAAS). As of February 14, the FAA had approved 1,028 WAAS approaches at 577 airports, more than half of them general aviation facilities.

Universal Avionics last month said it received an STC allowing installations of the company’s line of WAAS-capable FMS units in the Bombardier Challenger 600, 601 and 601-3R. Universal’s line of WAAS-ready flight management systems includes the UNS-1Lw, UNS-1Ew, UNS-1Espw and UNS-1Fw.

Chelmsford, Mass.-based Mercury Computer Systems is on hand at Heli-Expo to demonstrate its new VistaNav 3D synthetic-vision system with FLIR. According to a company spokesman, the now-available VistaNav 3D is the first such portable system for helicopters. On display are the company’s CIS-2000 and CIS-2200, which are classified as commercial class II electronic flight bag systems.
