Airbus announced plans for a new lower weight variant of its A330-300 widebody specifically designed for use on domestic and regional routes in high-growth markets with large populations and concentrated traffic flows, the company announced Wednesday at the Aviation Expo China show in Beijing.
Boeing and Airbus will share in the spoils of a massive investment by Lufthansa Group involving orders for 59 widebody airplanes worth $18.7 billion at list prices, the German airline announced Thursday.
The European Aviation Safety Agency has issued type certification for the higher efficiency and thrust “package C” version of Rolls-Royce’s Trent 1000 engine. The approval comes ahead of the anticipated first flight of Boeing’s 787-9 widebody. The 74,000-pound-thrust turbofan is set to power Air New Zealand’s first 787-9 when the new version of the Dreamliner family enters service next year, and it is also available for the existing 787-8.
Airbus has started market research focused on the needs and preferences of the world’s growing population of billionaires. Announcing the project in Moscow on September 9, Airbus Corporate Jets marketing director David Velupillai said that the investigation should be completed by October, with the results to be made public in a report during the following month. The study is intended to look beyond purely aircraft and travel, and will try to collect a broad array of data on billionaire’s lifestyles, habits and hobbies.
Jet Aviation Basel has signed a contract to design and complete the cabin of an A340-600 long-range widebody for an undisclosed customer. Work on the green Airbus will begin in next year’s first quarter.
Boeing has completed assembly on the first 787-9, the company announced on Saturday. The second member of the Dreamliner family rolled out of Boeing’s Everett, Washington, widebody plant to the flight line, where teams have begun preparing it to fly by the end of the summer.
Jet Aviation’s Basel, Switzerland location signed a completion contract for a private Airbus A340-600 long-range widebody. Work on the green Airbus will start in next year’s first quarter. The A340’s cabin will be configured with dining and lounge areas, two bedroom suites with adjoining bathrooms, office and executive seating areas, as well as high-density aft seating. Jet Aviation completed and delivered two private A340s last year.
Business jet interior components supplier Yankee Pacific Aerospace is doing “really well this year,” according to managing director Ken Goldsmith.
“We’ve seen an uptick, largely driven by the advent of the executive 747-8 and we see the future further driven by executive variants of the 787, [and] still to come are the business and private versions of the Boeing 737 Max and the follow-on 777X,” said Goldsmith. He also noted that the re-engined Airbus A320Neo is still to come, as is the A350 XWB from Airbus.
European aerospace conglomerate EADS reported increased revenues and profitability for the first half of the year on Wednesday, driven mainly by its Airbus commercial aircraft business. The company said it will rebrand itself next year as the Airbus Group to emphasize the predominance of its commercial business.
As Airbus handed over the 1,000th A330 to Cathay Pacific Airways last Friday, it confirmed plans to accelerate introduction of the 242-metric-ton maximum takeoff weight model and to offer a new, lower operating weight, shorter-range “regional” variant.
