Consulting firm Flight Department Solutions (FDS) has launched a new venture to help aircraft owners start their own flight departments. Called Flight Department Advantage, the new program can set up a flight department and assist with all aspects of running it.

“Historically for somebody getting a new airplane, the path of least resistance is to have it managed,” said Dave Weil, founder and CEO of San Francisco-based FDS. “We want to make it easier for them to have their own flight department.”

In the wake of a stinging critique issued by the Los Angeles County Fire Department after last year’s Station Fire, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is reviewing its ban on most nighttime aerial fire fighting. The Station Fire in the Angeles National Forest raged for nearly two months before it was contained, but not until it had destroyed 250 sq mi of forest (160,000 acres) and 96 homes.

Helitanker operators may have thought they would profit after the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and Department of the Interior (DOI) terminated contracts for 33 fixed-wing large airtankers due to airworthiness concerns last May, but a quiet fire season and a decrease in profitable call-when-needed deployments mitigated the potential windfall.

Australia has started a three-year research program to investigate the effectiveness of aerial “bush-fire” suppression. The Bush-fire Cooperative Research Centre (BCRC) will look at factors such as the level of aerial and ground suppression required for a fire suppression job and the upper intensity limit for effective suppression from different resources.
