The third flight-test D-Jet completed a one-hour 25-minute maiden flight April 15 from Diamond Aircraft’s London, Ontario facility. S/N 003 will be used for performance and handling quality refinement, and to develop avionics, fuel, autopilot and anti-ice systems. The airplane will be retrofitted with the Williams FJ33-19 engine later this year, but it won’t be the first D-Jet to fly with the uprated engine.

Piper Aircraft and Cirrus Design are neck and neck on progress with their respective single-engine very light jet prototypes, and the two competing airplanes could fly within days of each other in July. Workers at Cirrus are finishing V1 (the “V” stands for “verification”), an aerodynamically conforming–but not entirely systems conforming–Cirrus Jet prototype.

Late last week, Diamond Aircraft selected a more powerful version of the Williams FJ33 turbofan–the FJ33-4A-19–for its single-engine D-Jet. With 1,900 pounds of thrust versus 1,564 pounds for the originally planned FJ33-4A-15, the more powerful engine offers “a potential future performance upgrade path” for the very light jet.

Diamond Aircraft last month received a $19.6 million “repayable investment” from the Canadian government for research and development of its $1.4 million single-engine D-Jet. The government’s investment coincides with Diamond’s decision to manufacture the five-seat, all-composite jet single at its facility in London, Ontario, where the D-Jet R&D program is based.

Last month, the Melbourne, Fla.-based builder of the Maverick Leader, a four-place, twin-engine kit plane, announced that it would, effective immediately, now sell “all of its personal custom jets with its new fan jet engines,” the Williams FJ33 turbofan engine, rated at 1,100 pounds thrust.

Rick Adam, CEO of Adam Aircraft, told AIN at last month’s Sun ’n’ Fun airshow in Lakeland, Fla., that the A700 very light twinjet would make its first flight in the second half of this year and obtain certification next year. He said his company’s A500 inline piston twin, which is currently in flight testing and expected to earn FAA approval in July, is eliminating much of the risk for the Williams FJ33-1-powered A700.

Adam Aircraft successfully completed initial environmental testing of its A700 very light jet at the McKinley Climatic Laboratory at Eglin AFB in Florida. During the five-day exercise, the A700’s Williams FJ33-4 engines were exposed to freezing fog, freezing rain and blowing snow to evaluate the ground performance of the engine inlet anti-ice system.
