Customers who bring their Cessna Citation to Sierra Industries of Uvalde, Texas, for major maintenance or inspection events can now drop off their jet and fly home in a loaner airplane. Under Sierra’s Fly-Thru maintenance program, Citation operators will be supplied an equivalent airplane or Sierra’s Williams International-powered FJ44 Citation, providing an opportunity to see how the modified version flies.

Williams International last month completed extended testing of a coal-based, alternative fuel in an FJ44-3 engine. Two thousand gallons of the synthetic fuel powered the turbofan for 118 cycles over 21 hours. According to Williams, the fuel, which was developed by a team at Penn State University with help from Intertek-PARC and Duquesne University, performed well.

The FAA has issued a Supplemental Type Certificate to Clifford Development for modification of Cessna Citation 550s and S550s with Williams International FJ44-3A engines. Four Clifford installation centers will do the modifications: Great Lakes Aviation of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Threshold Aviation of Chino, Calif.; Central Flying Service of Little Rock, Ark.; and Stevens Aviation of Greenville, S.C.

Diamond D-Jet S/N 003 made its first flight on October 5 with the upgraded Williams International FJ33-5A engine. S/N 003 is now in the final configuration for certification, with the new engine, new engine inlets and fairings, aerodynamic changes and production winglets. The new engine will be derated to match the power output of the previous FJ33-15, but Diamond plans to offer a higher-thrust D-Jet later in the program.

On Sunday, Diamond Aircraft (Booth No. 4707) flew its D-Jet for the first time with the new Williams International FJ33-5A engine (formerly designated FJ33-19), the production powerplant for the single-engine personal jet.

On Sunday, Diamond Aircraft flew its D-Jet for the first time with the new Williams International FJ33-5A engine (formerly designated FJ33-19), the production powerplant for the single-engine personal jet. D-Jet S/N 003–the first production-conforming copy of the airplane now that the -5A has been installed–was flown by chief test pilot Daniel Ribeiro and flight test engineer Gerard Struthers.

Almost a century ago, Henry Ford launched his Model T as a car for the masses and subsequently produced 15 million automobiles over 19 years. Camilo Salomon, president and CEO of Safire Aircraft, does not fancy himself a Henry Ford, but he has high hopes that the company’s six-place Safire Jet will become the personal jet for masses of owner-flown operators.

Chichester-Miles Consultants of Hertfordshire, England, “is financially in balance,” said founder and chairman Ian Chichester-Miles. He also said he has “made some advance in obtaining financing” to develop the Williams FJ33-powered Leopard Six, but is bound by a confidentiality agreement about this financing until, possibly, the end of this year.

Another company has launched a bid in the crowded single-engine jet field. Stratos Aircraft of Bend, Ore., has launched the Stratos 714, which it claims will outperform single-engine jets from Cirrus Design, Diamond Aircraft, Eclipse Aviation, Piper Aircraft and even most twin-engine very light jets.
