Mitsubishi MU-2B-60, Millington, Tenn., Dec. 9, 2008–The right engine of the MU-2 lost power after the airplane took off from Millington Regional Jetport (NQA), where the ATP-rated pilot had flown to buy fuel. The aircraft had been held on the ground twice by ATC while storm cells passed. After takeoff, about 2.5 miles from home base, Charles W. Baker Airport, Millington, the engine quit.
Cessna 650 Citation III, Atlantic City, N.J., Oct. 27, 2007–The NTSB blamed this accident on the first officer’s failure to maintain airspeed during approach, and the captain’s inadequate correction. The first officer’s failure to comply with procedures, wind shear and the lack of wind shear warning from ATC contributed to the nonfatal accident.
Some pilots don’t look forward to flying in bad weather, but helicopter pilot and TV news reporter Johnny Rowlands actually fires up his Bell JetRanger and goes after the very worst in bad weather. Twice in May, on the 4th and 8th, Rowlands used “NewsChopper 9,” KMBC-TV’s Bell JetRanger, to track tornadoes that were savaging the Kansas City area, destroying property and killing people.
A Raytheon Premier I that ran off the runway on landing at North Las Vegas Airport (VGT) on May 27 might have gotten caught in a wind shift from a crosswind to a quartering tailwind moments before touching down. There were no injuries to the pilot or passenger, but the aircraft was substantially damaged, according to the NTSB’s preliminary report. The airplane touched down on 5,004-foot-long Runway 7 at 3:57 p.m.
Bell 206B3, Atlantic City, Wyo., Aug. 23, 2004–The Hawkins and Powers Aviation pilot was filming and had completed a “high groundspeed” pass when he encountered what he called wind shear and a “15- to 20-knot tailwind” while maneuvering close to the ground. The helicopter did not respond to control inputs and crashed, rolling over, crushing the forward fuselage and substantially damaging the helicopter.
Runway 14/32 opened in late November at Boston Logan International Airport. The new runway should reduce delays an average of 25 percent, but up to 90 percent when strong northwest winds are blowing. Runway 14/32 isn’t available all the time, but only when northwest or southeast winds are blowing at 10 knots or higher.
Raytheon 390 Premier I, North Las Vegas, May 27, 2004–A routine weather report advised that the wind was from 160 degrees at 15 knots gusting to 20 four minutes before Premier N5010X landed on Runway 7 at North Las Vegas Airport (VGT) and overran the runway.
