Aviation Partners said last month it received Transport Canada certification of its Hawker 800 blended winglet modification. The approval allows operators of the approximately 20 Canadian-registered Hawker 800s to consider the upgrade.
A Gulfstream IISP (for Special Performance–GIIs equipped with Aviation Partners’ winglets) set a world speed record December 15 on its way from Los Angeles to Kitty Hawk, N.C. The record flight was made to honor the Wright brothers’ first manned powered flight 100 years ago. The GIISP made the cross-country flight in 3 hours 48 minutes at an average groundspeed of 548 knots.
Stage III Technologies, which has been developing a Stage 3 hush kit for Gulfstream IIs and IIIs for more than five years, has received an STC for the Gulfstream IISP (the GII special performance model equipped with winglets). The La Jolla, Calif. company expects by May 1 to have STCs for the entire GII and GIII series. The Stage III system has no moving parts and adds no more than 20 pounds to the aircraft empty weight.
Pilatus’ PC-12 turboprop single will receive several upgrades next year, raising the base price of the aircraft by $80,000 to $2.79 million and a typically equipped aircraft to $3.4 million, according to a spokesperson for Pilatus Business Aircraft in Broomfield, Colo. The 2006 PC-12 will offer an additional 530 pounds of useful load, bringing it from 3,600 to 4,130 pounds for a typically equipped aircraft in an executive configuration.
Dassault has locked in its decision to push the Falcon 7X’s range from 5,700 nm to 6,000 nm and boost payload by 50 percent. The design improvements to the trijet include the installation of additional fuel tanks, an increase in thrust for the Pratt & Whitney Canada 307A turbofans and incorporation of Dassault-designed winglets. After wind-tunnel testing early in the 7X program, winglets were rejected.

It has been a long road for Raytheon Aircraft, but on November 21 the Hawker 4000 (née Horizon) super-midsize received full FAA certification, following the award of provisional certification almost two years earlier, and more than 10 years since the program was announced at the 1996 NBAA Convention.

Winglets increase efficiency by reducing lift-induced drag. They do this by relocating and diminishing the vortex at the wing’s tip, resulting in lower fuel burn, higher cruise speed and longer range.
Aviation Partners Boeing, the U.S. joint venture between “Blended Winglet” designer Aviation Partners and Boeing, last month received supplemental type certification for its winglet modification for the Boeing 757-200 airliner. The companies expect to start installing the eight-foot-two-inch tall Blended Winglets on Continental Airlines and Icelandair airplanes in July.
