Interiors specialist Fokker Services has selected AlsterAero of Hamburg, Germany, to provide an A319 (ACJ) entertainment and passenger communication system it describes as one of “the most sophisticated and flexible seen” on an executive jet to date. The core of the system is a wireless local area network, on-demand audio/video server, communication server connected to the satcom system and Ethernet switching network.
The U.S. Air Force last month reiterated its intention to choose a single contractor for a new constellation of global positioning satellites known as GPS III. Teams led by Lockheed Martin and Boeing are competing for the contract to launch eight Block A GPS III satellites by 2013. The Air Force invited bids last month for these first satellites, the foundation for an enhanced system scheduled to start operating in 2018.
Meteorlogix of Minneapolis has launched its MxVision AviationSentry helicopter edition, a weather system giving helicopter pilots a “fast, accurate and comprehensive weather briefing.” The system information includes real-time, high-resolution radar; storm tracking, with details on approaching cells; satellite imagery for identifying areas of low cloud and fog; and forecast maps.

With retirement for its aging RF-4 Phantoms looming, the Japan Air Self Defence Force has decided to equip a portion of its F-15J Eagle fighters with a reconnaissance capability. Yesterday Lockheed Martin announced that it would be part of a Japanese team to provide a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) capability to the Eagle. The company will provide SAR radars to be fitted into a pod carried under the aircraft’s belly.
