FltPlan.com is demonstrating its new Go iPad app at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh this week (at Hangar B, Booth 2002) and plans to release the new app later in August. The Go app adds many features for users of FltPlan.com’s free flight-planning service, and the app is integrated with the FltPlan.com website. Go users will also be able to use FltPlan.com’s e-logbook, weight and balance and pre-departure clearance features.
XM Satellite Radio
Jet Aviation St. Louis installed Honeywell’s DU- 875 flight-deck upgrade in an Embraer Legacy 600; it also recently gained approval for the Legacy 650. The MRO has also installed the system in the Bombardier Global Express. The new liquid-crystal DU-875 can display XM Weather and paperless charts and incorporates an LED backlight and patented wide-angle visibility technology. According to the MRO, the upgraded system weighs less than previous displays and is more reliable.
Pilatus Business Aircraft will offer a Garmin G600 New Perspective glass panel avionics retrofit for its legacy (pre-NG) PC-12 turboprop singles through its authorized and satellite service centers. Garmin is expected to receive supplemental type certificate (STC) approval for the installation late this year. All marketing and sales for the STC is being conducted through the Pilatus sales and service center network. Several centers already have begun accepting customer orders for the system.
Baron Services’ Mobile Link device can now provide up to four mobile devices with the ability to simultaneously connect to and receive XM WX graphical weather data. This upgrade, part of the free Firmware 2.2 update, is available immediately for current subscribers. Mobile Link allows XM WX Satellite Weather subscribers to display onboard weather data on their mobile devices, including the iPhone and iPad, using certain aviation apps.
DAC International (Stand 1131) has introduced the GDC64 tablet-to-aircraft interface, a small box that delivers aircraft data to devices such as the iPad and Android tablet computers and provides iPad battery charging. The GDC64 will be approved for Part 25 aircraft and can accept up to four Arinc 429 inputs, eight other discrete data inputs and serial data from a weather receiver.
The long-awaited marriage of Apple’s iPad and XM WX satellite-delivered weather data is finally here, and the system, offered by Baron Services, the XM WX provider to aviation, works as advertised.
The recently released ForeFlight Mobile v4.2 iPad app now allows users to display XM WX inflight weather data overlaid on maps displayed on the ForeFlight app. XM WX works with the Baron Mobile Link device and an XM receiver (from Baron or Heads Up Technologies), both of which communicate wirelessly with the iPad.
Apple’s iPad tablet computer is only about a year-and-a-half old, and in a short period of time it has exploded into aviation, unleashing a furious expenditure of creative energy by developers of applications for the compact and powerful portable device. Apps range from preflight performance calculators to flight planners and in-flight moving maps.
As Honeywell’s Falcon 900 equipped with the new EASy II avionics upgrade flew solidly down the glideslope to Runway 23 at Morristown Airport in New Jersey, the two pilots and I (sitting in the jump seat) could see a clear view of the outside world on the PFD’s SmartView synthetic-vision system (SVS) display. Outside the world was murky white and it stayed that way down to minimums.
Baron Services, the company that provides XM WX services, introduced an iPad Mobile Link plug-in gadget (introductory price $199.99) that lets compatible iPad apps display XM WX while airborne. Shipments start next month. The company hasn’t revealed subscription prices for XM WX via Mobile Link, but did say that Nexrad radar, satellite imagery, Metar, Taf, TFR, winds aloft, Airmet and Sigmet weather data will be available.
