Deer Jet, Asia’s largest business jet operator, is gradually transforming from a regional operator to a global one as it approaches its 20th anniversary. The Beijing-based company now has a fleet of 85 aircraft, based not only in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, but also in the U.S., Dubai and Moscow.

FlightSafety International (Booth 473) expects its Embraer Legacy 500 simulator will receive FAA and EASA approval by the end of this month. The New York-based Berkshire Hathaway unit is also offering new programs for Gulfstream GIV, GV and G550 aircraft, providing satcom system training for pilots, crew and maintenance technicians and expanding its online training reservations system.

Business aviation data provider Amstat (Booth 2968) has noted increasing sales activity in the industry of late. According to the Tinton Falls, N.J.-based company, a greater percentage of the active fleet of business jets (7.8 percent) sold in the first nine months of 2014 than in the same period in any year over the last decade.

Rockford Area Aerospace Network (Booth 4835) has come to the NBAA show seeking to attract more business aviation companies to join the growing aerospace cluster being formed around the northern Illinois city. Already some 250 aviation and aerospace firms have facilities in the Rockford region, which is about 60 miles northwest of Chicago and close to the southern Wisconsin border. These include companies such as UTC Aerospace, GE Aviation, Esterline, AAR and B/E Aerospace.

Donated auction items for the NBAA/Corporate Angel Network (CAN) Soirée– An Evening with Angels–are starting to flow in. Proceeds from the auction benefit CAN, which arranges flights to treatment centers for cancer patients aboard business aircraft. The Soirée, held annually during the NBAA Convention, will take place at 6 p.m. tomorrow night at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando, Fla.

A rollout ceremony held Saturday in Nagoya, Japan, for the Mitsubishi MRJ regional jet marked a symbolic end of a 50-year wait for a new Japanese airliner to take shape. Not since the NAMC YS-11 turboprop flew for the first time in 1962 has a Japanese effort to break into the commercial airplane market reached such a state of progress. Under development for some seven years, the MRJ finally looks like an airplane capable of flying—and ultimately delivering the 20-percent fuel efficiency improvement over current designs Mitsubishi Aircraft advertises.
