The six-seat Citation Mustang, Cessna’s newest addition to its stable of business jets, is starting to take shape. At press time, the Wichita manufacturer was busy building the Mustang prototype’s tooling, and more than 3,700 of the very light jet’s 5,000 detail parts had been fabricated. The $2.395 million Mustang is the company’s first clean-sheet aircraft design since it launched the Citation III in 1978.

Cessna Citation 550, Butler, Pa., Jan. 24, 2007–The Air Trek Citation 550 air ambulance landed long at Butler, Pa., slid off the runway and hit a localizer. Weather was IMC. Two people on board were slightly injured and the aircraft was substantially damaged. Air Trek, based in Punta Gorda, Fla., was involved in a fatal accident in 2004.

Cessna booked orders for 71 Citations in the third quarter, bringing the order book to just under 230 for the first nine months of this year, according to the company’s earnings report released this morning by the manufacturer’s parent company, Textron. Cessna delivered 61 Citations in the third quarter of this year compared with 41 a year ago and one higher than its forecasted range of 55 to 60.

Jet Aviation and Airbus signed a service center agreement for Airbus Corporate Jetliner support. It stipulates Jet Aviation will support the ACJ through its global network and various lines of business including aircraft management, charter, outfitting and refurbishment, maintenance and FBO services.

The first Citation Mustang conforming prototype got its wings on the morning of February 3. Workers at Cessna’s Pawnee facility in Wichita mated the wing to the fuselage in a process that took less than 20 minutes, according to the company.

Southern Star Avionics has completed required flight testing for Cessna Citation 560 and S550 airframes and expects to receive RVSM group certification for the types early next month. The $95,000 installation kits use IS&S digital altimeters with integrated air-data computers and analog interface units. The company said the upgrade is available for both single and dual flight director aircraft equipped with Sperry SPZ-500 autopilots.

Values among many pre-owned aircraft began to stabilize this year, with some even appreciating while others sought traction amid slipping prices. This year will close having sustained a trend toward lowering inventory, and the impetus for continued tightening remains in place. Though interest rates are rising, they are low by historical standards, enabling buyers to secure attractive financing rates.

CESSNA 560 CITATION, SAVANNAH, GA., NOV. 25, 2003–A Cessna Citation 560 (N632QS) registered to Convergys Corp c/o NetJets Sales, Oklahoma City, Okla. received minor damage when it landed with the nosewheel retracted on Runway 9 at Savannah (SAV), Ga. There were no injuries in the November 25 incident, which occurred at approximately 10 p.m. in VMC. The aircraft had departed Hilton Head (HXD), S.C.

Last month Cessna said it had begun production line flow of its new Citation CJ2+ and would soon start production of the Citation CJ1+. On February 11, the first Citation CJ2+ (S/N 525A-000300) began its journey down the production line. This twinjet will be used to certify the avionics for the CJ2+.

Call them what you want–very light jets (VLJs), compact jets, minijets, microjets, personal jets or even Barbie jets–they’re no longer “paper” airplanes. First deliveries of certified VLJs are less than a year away, if Eclipse Aviation adheres to its plan to begin deliveries of its Model 500 next March.
