Dramatic photos circulating on the Internet purporting to show a Williams International FJ44-3A-24 installed on a Cessna Citation CJ2+ destroyed by exposure to volcanic ash from the recent eruption in Iceland are “complete fiction,” according to Brad Thress, Cessna vice president of product support. The incident occurred about a month before the April eruption, he said. “It’s viral,” Thress said.
Cessna Citation 525A, Stuttgart, Germany, March 1, 2010–The German-registered CJ2 was climbing after takeoff from Stuttgart in VMC, en route to Bremen for maintenance, when the left engine experienced an uncontained failure. The twinjet returned to Stuttgart and landed without further incident. The pilot was not injured. The German Federal Government is conducting the investigation.
Cessna Aircraft has brought 10 of the company’s current in-production fleet to the EBACE 2010 static display, including eight Citation jets (Mustang, CJ1+, CJ2+, CJ3, the newly certified CJ4, XLS+, Sovereign and X), a Grand Caravan single-engine turboprop and a piston-engine 400 Corvalis TT.
Cessna Aircraft last month announced the introduction of wide-area augmentation system (Waas) avionics upgrades for the Citation CJ1+, CJ2+, CJ3 and Encore+ as well as certain Citation Excel and XLS airplanes. Cessna has obtained a service bulletin for the installations in the CJ models and Encore+. Waas can be added to Excel and XLS models equipped with the Universal Avionics UNS-1Espw flight management system.
Since last year’s EBACE show, Canada-based training provider CAE (Booth No. 1063) has expanded its offerings by adding eight new full-flight simulators to its training centers in Dallas, New York, London and Dubai. It is currently preparing to install another eight new civil simulators among its global facilities.
Cessna Aircraft delivered the first Citation CJ4 on April 15, just a month after obtaining type approval for the light twinjet from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
Cessna Citation 550B, Reinhardtsdorf-Schöna, Germany, Feb. 14, 2010–The Czech-registered twinjet was on a ferry flight from Prague to Karlstadt, Sweden, when it crashed, destroying the aircraft and killing the pilot and copilot. Dark night VMC prevailed at the time. The Citation Bravo was climbing from FL260 to FL330 when radar contact was lost.
The FAA has issued a supplemental type certificate (STC) to Sierra Industries for the installation of the Artex C406 (406 MHz) emergency locator transmitter on the Cessna Citation 500, 501, 550, 551, S550 and 560. The STC provides a solution
for operators to update their emergency transmitters to current standards.
The Cessna Citation CJ4 gained FAA type certification last month, with deliveries of the light jet set to begin later this year. The final performance numbers for the $9 million CJ4 include a takeoff distance of 3,130 feet at mtow, a maximum speed of 453 knots and 2,002-nm range with two crew and five pax.
Looking not unlike a T-tail compact version of its Sovereign stablemate, the Cessna Citation CJ4 should have earned its FAA credentials by the time these words are printed. At press time, Cessna said FAA certification of its newest business jet would happen “soon,” and that it would include single-pilot approval and a type rating common to all CJ-series Citations.
