GE Aviation this week reported that testing on the high pressure compressor (HPC) module for the GE9X engine that will power Boeing’s 777X aircraft continues to yield “very promising results,” achieving a 27:1 pressure ratio–the highest of any commercial aircraft engine. The tests began in September at the GE Oil & Gas testing facility in Massa, Italy, and the module has accumulated close to 300 hours of testing today.
A long-term agreement between key supplier to the Boeing 787 program, UTC Aerospace Systems (Chalet CD07), and Lufthansa Technik (LHT, Booth K65) has been announced for the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of UTC’s interiors products, sensors and integrated systems on the Boeing 787. The agreement builds on a previous contract, expanding LHTs capabilities as a licensed MRO provider for UTC. The two have shared a working relationship on the 787 since 2011.
Leasing groups Amadeo and Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) yesterday pushed the airliner orders tally for the 2014 Singapore Airshow close to $30 billion, with separate deals for up 60 new aircraft. Amadeo, which up until Monday this week was known as Doric Lease Corp., firmed up an order for 20 Airbus A380s that had been the subject of a memorandum of understanding signed at the last Paris Air Show in June 2013. Meanwhile DAE inked a $1 billion contract with ATR for up to 40 ATR 72-600s turboprops.
Rolls-Royce and Cathay Pacific have agreed a TotalCare support contract for Trent 700 engines that power Cathay Pacific group’s 60 Airbus A330 aircraft in-service and on-order with Cathay Pacific group airlines, Rolls-Royce announced in Singapore on Monday. The contract runs for as long as Cathay Pacific and its sister company Dragonair operate the Trent-powered A330s.
Cathay Pacific became the first airline to operate any Trent engine when its Airbus 330s entered service in 1995 and today it stands as the largest Rolls-Royce Trent 700 customer.
As Rolls-Royce (Booth N23) prepares to begin a two-year development and testing phase for the latest Trent engine–the Model 1000-TEN, designed to power Boeing’s stretched 787-10 large twin-aisle twinjet–it has completed three full demonstrators and is building a fourth that will be used in a 500 flight-cycle trial.
The full international debut of Airbus’s A350XWB airliner will dominate both the static and flying displays on the first two days of the Singapore Airshow. The European airframer’s second flight test airplane–MSN3–arrived here over the weekend and flew a display rehearsal on Sunday afternoon over the Singapore Strait. It is due to depart at the end of Wednesday.
As the Airbus A350-900 twin-aisle twinjet makes its first full international airshow display here in Singapore this week, industry observers will be keen to understand the manufacturer’s plans for the smaller A350-800, which has seen a steady erosion of orders as customers have upgraded to the baseline model. With average aircraft seat capacity moving inexorably to the right, Airbus executives are also mulling a possible double-stretched variant beyond the longer A350-1000.
Ahead of an initial engine run in the second quarter of this year, Rolls-Royce (Booth N23) has started to assemble the 97,000-pound thrust Trent XWB-97 powerplant that will power the heavier, 308-metric-ton (680,000-pound) max takeoff weight Airbus A350-1000 stretch variant of the new twin-aisle twinjet that has been flying since last June. The first items for the powerplant were arriving in the Rolls-Royce (RR) finished parts stores during January, according to program director Chris Young.
Rolls-Royce’s factory near Seletar Airport is up and running, producing approximately 50 Trent 900s per year, while gearing up to add other engine types to its production line, beginning with the Trent 1000.
Cenco (Safran) will build a 46-foot engine test cell in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for Saudia Aerospace Engineering Industries (SAEI). The new facility will allow SAEI to test the GE90-94/115, CFM56-5B/7B, CF34-8E/10E, CF6-80C2D1F/B5F and V2500-D5 while providing for future engine programs such as the Rolls-Royce Trent 700/900/1000 and the GE Aviation GEnx-1B/2B. The facility is set to enter service in July 2016.
