Rolls-Royce’s plans to build a greenfield factory in Singapore to manufacture and test the latest Trent engines came as no surprise given the increasing importance of the Asia Pacific region as a market for aircraft engines.
Aerostructures and equipment manufacturer Goodrich (Chalet CD07) tomorrow will inaugurate its new maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility here in Singapore. The facility is now Goodrich’s largest MRO facility in the world. In addition to sophisticated composite repairs, the Charlotte, North Carolina-based company is here doing research and development, such as a fan cowl for Pratt & Whitney’s geared turbofan.
Rolls-Royce has confirmed a follow-on order from Singapore Airlines for Trent 900 engines to power SIA’s nine additional Airbus A380s.
In what is the second commitment for the newest member of the Airbus corporate jetliner family, an unidentified Asian customer has placed a firm order for an Airbus A350XWB Prestige. The aircraft will feature a VIP interior and will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB87 engines. The choice of cabin outfitter has yet to be announced.
The Airbus A380 powered by Engine Alliance GP7200 engines received joint European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and FAA type certification last Friday. The approval came a year and two days after the EASA and FAA issued the Rolls-Royce-powered A380 its certification, on Dec. 12, 2006. MSN009, Airbus’ test aircraft powered by the Engine Alliance turbofans, completed nearly 800 hours of test flying.
Airbus and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) signed a memorandum of understanding for the extension of an important supplier contract last Tuesday. A long-standing supplier to Airbus and other EADS business units, TAI manufactures nine single-aisle fuselage section skins per month, a rate Airbus wants to increase to around 15 sets per month.
Rolls-Royce has notched another sale of its Trent XWB engine for the Airbus A350XWB, this time to International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC).
N3 Engine Overhaul Services–a joint venture between Rolls-Royce (Stand W206) and Lufthansa Technik (Stand C518)–opened officially in September. It is the latest in a global network of Trent engine overhaul facilities.
