FAREWELL TO GUESTS UP FRONT–Jumpseat rides on non-U.S. airlines are one of the many casualties of recent events. It wasn’t just September 11, either.
A third super-midsize Continental last month entered flight testing with a 1 hr 53 min flight from Bombardier’s Wichita Flight Test Center. The aircraft is dedicated mostly to avionics testing, including the autopilot, yaw damper, flight management system, EFIS and Eicas. As of December 6, the first Continental had flown 136 hr on 54 flights since August 14.
The NTSB is investigating whether a rudder problem caused a United Boeing 737 to swing suddenly left and right and bank sharply while descending for landing in Chicago late last month. The pilots reported the airplane suddenly swung to the left and right when it started to descend at about 9,000 ft msl. When the autopilot was disconnected, the airplane banked sharply. Rudder problems are suspected in two fatal U.S.
“Beginning autorotation with left turn.”
“Roger. Autorotate to left.”
After a few moments, during which the MD 600N helicopter plummets toward the ground engaged in a sweeping left turn, the first pilot’s voice comes over the radio. “Recovering.” He recovers at approximately 100 ft over the desert floor.
“Roger. Recover.” This voice belongs to the pilot of the chase aircraft, also an MD helicopter.

Denmark’s ScanTech has outfitted a King Air 200 from Swedish air ambulance operator Svensk Flygambulans AB with five Raisbeck EPIC Performance Systems at its facility in Sindal. The retrofits included Hartzell/Raisbeck turbofan propellers, high-flotation gear doors, dual aft body strakes, enhanced-performance leading edges and ram air recovery systems.
CESSNA 421B, NORMAN, OKLA., DEC. 10, 2000–The NTSB listed as the probable cause of this accident “the pilot’s failure to follow the instrument approach procedure and his continued descent below the prescribed minimum descent altitude (MDA).” Contributory factors were the pilot’s physical impairment from drugs, the low ceiling, fog and dark-night light conditions. The pilot and his passenger were killed in the accident.
Mitsubishi MU-2B-26A, San Antonio, Texas, Jan. 22, 2000–The NTSB’s factual report is now out on the fatal crash of MU-2 N386TM. The twin turboprop was destroyed and both pilots were killed when it crashed immediately after takeoff from the San Antonio International Airport at 1432 CST.
PC-12 flight planning seems to work out best at 260 kt, which means a 1,200-nm trip with IFR reserves will keep you in the cabin for 4.5 hr. But passengers who have flown the airlines will find that spending a long trip time in the Pilatus is a treat because of all the extra space and the working toilet. Since the potty is up front, the crew can use the facility without disturbing passengers.
Autopilot maker Meggitt/S-TEC announced it has gained STC approval to install its new Magic 2100 digital flight-control system in Twin Commanders. The company’s first all-new autopilot since Meggitt acquired S-TEC two years ago, the Magic 2100 DFCS is a three-axis, fully digital attitude-based flight-control system.
