Aero Commander 690A, Antlers, Okla., Oct. 15, 2006–The NTSB blamed the
in-flight breakup of the experimental Aero Commander on the pilot’s failure to reduce airspeed in moderate turbulence. Contributing factors were his decision to exceed the maximum takeoff weight, and the prevailing turbulence.

Cessna Citation 650, Atlantic City, N.J., Oct. 27, 2007–Citation N697MC came in “low and slow” on approach to Atlantic City International Airport and landed hard, substantially damaging the jet. The captain told the copilot to increase power, but the copilot “seemed confused” about different airspeed readings on the right- and left-side panel displays.

Hawker Beechcraft King Air 200, Salmon, Idaho, Dec. 10, 2007–Trying to return for a landing immediately after taking off from Lemhi County Airport in a snowstorm “of varying intensity,” the King Air crashed into a hangar. The commercial pilot and a passenger were killed and the airplane, owned and operated by QB Corp., was destroyed.

Considering the myriad benefits that digital fly-by-wire flight control systems provide, it’s somewhat surprising that only one business jet–Dassault’s Falcon 7X–has been certified with the technology.

Rick Adam, CEO of Adam Aircraft, told AIN at last month’s Sun ’n’ Fun airshow in Lakeland, Fla., that the A700 very light twinjet would make its first flight in the second half of this year and obtain certification next year. He said his company’s A500 inline piston twin, which is currently in flight testing and expected to earn FAA approval in July, is eliminating much of the risk for the Williams FJ33-1-powered A700.

The “affordable jet” has become synonymous with the flying car. It is always two to three years away from becoming reality. It has been for the last 20 years, and judging from what we are seeing, it may continue to be a dream for the next 20 years. Having invested in several aircraft companies, I certainly don’t claim to be an authority, but I do offer the following advice:

The 10-seat Taska, a turboprop derivative of the Gippsland Aeronautics GA-8 Airvan piston single, “is only at the concept stage,” according to Michael Hall, Gippsland marketing director. “I would expect at least 12 months before we have a prototype flying,” he told AIN in February.

Dassault pilots and engineers have been “flying” a Falcon 7X simulator since December at the French company’s Saint-Cloud headquarters near Paris. The Falcon simulation testbed (FST) has been built to develop the control laws of the new trijet’s fly-by-wire (FBW) system. Next year it will be fitted with all of the 7X’s control-related systems, Dassault technical managers told AIN.

Like the old blues song goes, “It’s been a long time coming. But a change is gonna come.” That change–the possible revolution that is the promise of civil tiltrotor flight– took to the air on March 7 with the first flight of Bell/Agusta Aerospace’s BA609 tiltrotor prototype.
