The blizzard of order activity at this year’s Paris Air Show might have obscured a highly significant signing in the regional jet arena for one of the stars of the salon’s flying display.
Sukhoi Superjet 100
Sukhoi Civil Aircraft and Alenia Aeronautica announced the launch of an executive version of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) regional jet, on Tuesday at the Paris Air Show. Dubbed the Sukhoi Business Jet (SBJ), the project falls under the responsibility of Italian support and marketing arm Superjet International, the joint venture between Alenia and Sukhoi Holding.
Ukraine’s Antonov has come a long way since it was last here at the Paris Air Show, but it still has a long way to go. In February, its An-158 regional jet completed initial type certification and first deliveries are pending. The smaller An-148 model has been in service for some time with launch customers Aerosvit (three aircraft) and Rossiya (six).
Another day, and plenty more dollars. The second day of the 2011 Paris Air Show saw yet more major orders for airliners and the engines that power them.

Six Aeroflot flight instructors have qualified in the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) after undergoing 40 days of training at the manufacturer’s Zhukovsky base near Moscow. These pilots will be flying the Russian carrier’s first SSJ100 to enter revenue service, with initial passenger flights expected later this summer.
At this year’s Paris Air Show, Esterline CMC Electronics (Hall 5 Stand 242) is showing, for the first time, the Cockpit 9000 avionics suite selected as an upgrade for Lockheed Martin C-130 cockpits.
United Aircraft, builder of the Sukhoi Superjet SJ100, is considering a corporate transport version of the regional jet, which would serve the niche between large business aircraft such as Gulfstream’s G550 and the Boeing BBJ. The proposal stems from inquiries about the potential for a business jet variant of the aircraft, scarcely three months after its service entry.
The Sukhoi Superjet 100 will eventually welcome a new, larger sibling, possibly one as large as 130 seats in capacity, but not until the original SSJ100-95–on display here at Le Bourget–loses some weight for Aeroflot and gains some range for Latin American launch customer Interjet of Mexico.
The aerospace industry is in recovery, and if you don’t believe that come to this year’s Paris Air Show and see for yourself. That is the optimistic message from the organizers of the biennial event, which will be staged for the 49th time at Paris Le Bourget Airport from June 20 to 26.
