Eurofighter production

A slowing of the production rate of the Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft is partly responsible for new job losses in the UK and Italy. BAE Systems is trimming 1,500 workers from its employment rolls at Warton and Samlesbury in the UK. Alenia is cutting 1,200 jobs in Italy. Both companies blame squeezed defense budgets for the cuts.

New payloads from foreign suppliers can now be added to the Predator/Reaper s

A cooperation between General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) and Selex Galileo will enable the integration and control of non-U.S. sensors on the Predator and Reaper UAV series. Selex Galileo has developed a “platform agnostic” open architecture named SkyIstar for unmanned aerial systems. The Anglo-Italian company will now integrate the SeaSpray 7500E radar on a Predator-B.

The new Western European launch customer for the Sukhoi SuperJet 100, Italy’s Blue Panorama Airlines, expects to convert its Paris Air Show memorandum of understanding covering 12 SSJ100s into an order for eight aircraft (plus options on four) next month, once it has reached an agreement with SaM146 engine supplier PowerJet, a Snecma/NPO Saturn Franco-Russian joint venture.

Airbus Military and Alenia announced new orders for their rival medium-size tactical transports. Airbus Military has sold two C295s to the Ghana Air Force, which will use them for troop transport, paratrooping, medical evacuation and humanitarian operations. The company said the C295 was chosen because of its ease of maintenance and proven operational capabilities in any environment, including deserts.

Italy’s Alenia Aeronautica will now serve as a “second source” of the composite horizontal stabilizer for the Boeing 787-9 under a plan to move primary responsibility for the component to Boeing’s Advanced Development Center in Seattle. Under a new contract Boeing recently signed with Alenia, the Italian manufacturer will lose its position as prime contractor for the component starting in 2013, according to a Boeing statement.

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft and Alenia Aeronautica announced the launch of an executive version of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) regional jet, on Tuesday at the Paris Air Show. Dubbed the Sukhoi Business Jet (SBJ), the project falls under the responsibility of Italian support and marketing arm Superjet International, the joint venture between Alenia and Sukhoi Holding.
