The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) on August 7 said it was pleased to see the transfer of the Federal Flight Deck Officer Program (FFDO) by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to the assistant administrator for Training and Workforce Engagement. The FFDO allows qualified airmen to carry sidearms into the cockpit. ALPA president Lee Moak said, “TSA’s decision to bring the program under TWE is positive action to ensure that FFDOs receive the strongest possible training.”
Vision Aviation, the lone services provider at Louisiana’s Lake Charles Regional Airport for more than a decade, has sold its FBO business to Freeman Holdings Group, owner of 11 Million Air locations, three of them in the Bayou State, including one at nearby Chennault International Airport. At the company’s request, the airport authority terminated its agreement with Vision Aviation and approved the sale of its assets, before granting a new 50-year lease to Freeman Holdings. Vision Aviation will continue to operate several hangars at the airport.
Two U.S. humanitarian aid workers who contracted Ebola while working in Africa were flown from Liberia to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta aboard a specially equipped aeromedical Gulfstream GIII operated by Cartersville, Ga.-based Phoenix Air. Dr. Kent Brantly was transported to the U.S. on Saturday, August 2, and Nancy Writebol was flown back today, arriving early this afternoon at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Ga. Both worked for aid group Samaritan’s Purse.
After eight years of litigation, a legal battle between ExxonMobil and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) over mandatory pilot retirement age has concluded with a ruling by the Fifth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. The appeals panel upheld the previous ruling that the energy company’s policy on mandatory retirement for its corporate pilots at age 60 (later 65) does not violate the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA).

Testing the U.S. Army conducted in June proved that equipping an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for an airborne electronic attack role is “technically and tactically feasible.” The service will continue experimenting with the system, although it has no immediate plans to field it on a UAS.
Exelis (Chalet C4A) has received processor qualification designation from Boeing for its composite design and manufacturing center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The qualification, achieved after a technical review against six Boeing specifications (BAC5578 and BAC5317-1 through -5), designates Exelis as an approved supplier of advanced, composite-structures to the Boeing supply chain.
Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush celebrated his 90th birthday on June 12 by making a tandem parachute jump from a Bell 429 light twin near his summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine. Bush and tandem partner Mike Elliott, a former member of the U.S. Army’s Golden Knights parachute squad and current president of the All Veteran Parachute Team, departed the 429 from 6,300 feet msl and landed uneventfully on the grounds of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church, where Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush were married almost 70 years ago.
