Flying commercially using a single-engine aircraft under instrument flight rules (SECIFR) or at night may be taken for granted in the U.S., but it has not been possible in Europe–until now. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has cracked the door open–first for cargo operators and more recently, in the past few months, for flights carrying fare-paying passengers. It has left the decision to individual countries’ regulators, however, and France and Finland have taken the lead.

FlightSafety International has received approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency for more than 140 of the Part 147 maintenance courses it offers. The approval was granted following a detailed review and evaluation of FlightSafety’s existing courses in accordance with the EASA Training Needs Analysis regulation 1149/2011.

The courses range from two to 25 days’ duration, and are aligned to the latest standards set by EASA as well as Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority, the Civil Aviation Administration of China and Transport Canada.

Aviation authorities in China and Canada have completed type certification for Gulfstream’s new G280. The U.S. manufacturer confirmed the approvals late last week and the new super-midsize model now meets all airworthiness and environmental requirements in the two countries. The steps clear the way for customers to place G280s on the national registers of China or Canada for the first time. The aircraft has previously been certified in the U.S. and Israel, as well as having been approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency. It entered service on November 13 last year.

So-called harmonized flight- and duty-time rules for pilots and cabin crew approved by a European Aviation Safety Agency committee on July 11 drew sharply different reactions from Europe’s pilot union coalition and airline associations on Monday. Speaking with AIN last Tuesday, European Cockpit Association president Nico Voorbach characterized the basis for the new rules as unscientific and driven wholly by the interests of the airline lobby in Europe.

PT Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) AeroAsia, an Indonesian’ maintenance company, has received European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) recognition. “We are grateful the training organization undertaken by GMF Learning Services has been recognized at the international level,” said GMF Learning Services and corporate culture vice president Hermawan Syahrul. GMF Learning Services is set to provide the required training to meet the MRO’s technical personnel needs and will also offer maintenance training to both national and international aviation industry technicians, he added.

Prague, Czech Republic-based Aviation Service, a Bell Helicopter service facility, has been granted expanded and updated terms of its design organization approval from EASA. The expansion of the DOA certification allows Aviation Service to perform major changes on the primary structure and cabin interior on all Bell helicopter models.
