GM Nameplate of Seattle is offering a new “ElectraGraphics Business Jet Art” line that employs 14-karat gold or chrome on a stainless-steel background to recreate virtually any image or existing picture in raised graphic form. The process begins with the application of a film layer with the image desired. A subsequent chemical process creates a graphic replica of that image in gold or chrome on the steel surface.
Doncasters is investing close to $350,000 to develop the plasma spray facility at Doncasters Airmotive and Doncasters Aerospace Components in Shrewsbury, UK. Plasma spray technology is used to apply various metallic and ceramic coatings onto components by feeding the metallic or ceramic powder into a plasma flame with intense heat that melts the powder and sprays it onto the component.
Congress has allocated $8.5 million to research on alternative piston aviation fuels in the coming fiscal year. Though current supplies and production of 100LL avgas are secure for the near term, AOPA argues that alternatives may become necessary later.
American Eagle executives planned to meet with FAA officials last month to discuss the Dallas-based airline’s alleged violations of hazardous-materials regulations. The FAA alleges that on one occasion in 2000 American Eagle transported an oxygen generator as cargo aboard a passenger flight. It also claims that Eagle improperly offered oxygen generators to Federal Express for shipment by air on seven separate occasions.
Testifying before the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on air-quality standards for lead, AOPA executive v-p of government affairs Andy Cebula warned that any immediate changes to current aviation fuel standards would have a “direct impact on the safety of flight and the very future of light aircraft in this country.”
Complex materials, made of carbon fiber composites and a metal, are tricky to characterize. “We already know that titanium is a better match than aluminum with carbon fiber,” research coordinator Benoît Sagot-Duvauroux said. But now researchers are endeavoring to put numbers on corrosion and dilatation issues, for example. Simulation of real-world operating conditions is the key to success in this work.
Airbus has agreed to start approval testing for a new tungsten carbide-based coating developed by the UK’s Hardide Coatings (Hall 4 Stand E20) as a replacement for chrome coatings. The Airbus trials will last three years. It is the eighth aerospace manufacturer to test the new coating, which is already in use in harsh environments in the oil and gas exploration sector.
GKN Aerospace has delivered the first production examples of an entirely new process for creating complex curved titanium structures. The delta pressure forming process is now being used to make the advanced cone-shaped titanium exhaust systems for the Boeing 747-800 airliner. The unit is lighter and more durable.
Allegheny Technologies (ATI) is exhibiting at a Farnborough Air Show for the first time as ATI Aerospace–a new “market sector team” charged with answering record demand for titanium and super alloys from the aerospace and defense industry.
AirCell is introducing two new airborne telecommunications products, the AST 3500, which combines cellular technology with the Iridium satcom system, and the ST 3100, which relies exclusively on Iridium. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in November.
