Universal Avionics plans to announce FAA certification of the first TSO’d WAAS-qualified FMS for installation on Part 23 and 25 aircraft at a press conference today at
2 p.m. The new Universal W series FMS allows operators to use GPS as a primary means of navigation and to fly WAAS/LPV IFR approaches. The W series FMS is certified to TSO C146b, Class Gamma-3, according to Universal Avionics.
Honeywell Aerospace has selected Belgian avionics display specialist Barco to supply LCD multifunction cockpit displays as upgrades for CRT-based display units used with legacy Sperry/Honeywell Primus 1000, 2000, 2000XP, SPZ-8400, 8500 and 8000 avionics systems.

Universal Avionics Systems Corp. of Tucson, Ariz., announced that Charles Edmondson, one of the founders of the company along with the late Hubert Naimer, has retired. The two men founded the company in Torrance, Calif., in 1980. As executive vice president, Edmondson had responsibility for Universal Avionics’ worldwide operations. More recently, he served as senior corporate vice president and as a member of the board of directors.
Bombardier is bringing Rockwell Collins’ new Pro Line Fusion cockpit to the Global Express XRS and 5000 as long-overdue replacements for the airplanes’ Honeywell Primus 2000XP avionics. Migrating from six CRT screens to four large-format LCDs will allow Bombardier to add synthetic vision, enhanced vision, electronic charting and other advanced capabilities to its top-of-the line models.
Since launching the Zing engine data-gathering service at last year’s NBAA Convention, Honeywell has been testing the system in a select group of customer airplanes in preparation for its official rollout. Zing eliminates the need for a mechanic to plug a laptop computer into an airplane to download engine operating data. It instead allows wireless transmission of engine information by tapping into the existing GSM/GPRS cellphone network.
Honeywell has launched a review of its customer service activities in an effort aimed at streamlining the number of ways customers can reach product support phone lines.
Before the overhaul, Honeywell had no fewer than 270 different ways for customers to call for help including hot lines and toll-free numbers. Those have been consolidated into one line that uses a system known as intelligent call routing, the company said.
Deliveries of the new WSI InFlight AV-300 series datalink weather systems began earlier this month, following their introduction and demonstrations at EAA AirVenture 2007 in July.
