The U.S. Navy has promised to announce the winner of its Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) competition on March 5. The BAMS requirement for a high-altitude, long endurance platform has provoked an intriguing contest. Northrop Grumman was seen as the leading contender, with a version of the Global Hawk UAV equipped with a new radar from the company’s Baltimore facility, plus enhanced communications links.

Avidyne is close to launching components for a next-generation integrated avionics system that the company is hinting will feature ultra-high-resolution glass displays, WAAS GPS receiver, flight management system and the company’s recently TSO’d navcom radios.

CMC Electronics is displaying its TacView portable mission display for the first time, here at the Singapore Airshow. In October 2007 the U.S. Air Force chose TacView was chosen for its AC-130 gunships. Measuring five by seven inches, the touch-sensitive display can serve many functions, including targeting imagery, moving maps, checklists and approach charts. It is small enough to mount in virtually any cockpit, and it has a knee-pad option.

Thales is targeting the huge potential for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for coastal surveillance in Southeast Asia by offering a compact, lightweight radar system called the Coastmaster. The UK group’s aerospace division developed the 66-pound system from the ground surveillance radar being fitted to the British Army’s Watchkeeper UAVs. (Helicopters and small manned aircraft could also carry the new radar.)
