Like its non-turbine siblings–the DA40 Diamond Star and DA42 Twin Star–the Diamond D-Jet will feature a Garmin G1000 integrated avionics suite, Olathe, Kan.-based Garmin said yesterday. As such, Diamond’s very light jet single will have a three-panel G1000 flight-deck system with two primary flight displays and a multifunction display.
Starting today, 216 NDB approaches will be decommissioned. Although the FAA has yet to actually switch them off the air, the decommissioned NDB stations will no longer be flight-checked, maintained, approved for use or shown on updated charts, according to AOPA. “The FAA decommissioned them after careful coordination with AOPA and the aviation community,” said Randy Kenagy, AOPA director of advanced technology.

Garrett Piedmont Hawthorne is now installing Rockwell Collins avionics upgrades for Citation 501s, including the Williams International FJ44-powered (Eagle II) Citation 501s. Supplemental type certification has been completed for the optional three-LCD system and an STC is in works for the standard two-display system.
Verizon Airfone has sent letters to customers informing them that the MagnaStar air-to-ground phone service will stay on the air until at least the end of next year. The service extension gives business aircraft operators flying with MagnaStar gear an extra year to explore alternatives, which for many will likely involve upgrading to Iridium or Inmarsat satcom equipment.
CMC Electronics has introduced the CMA-1100, a handheld electronic flight bag (EFB) computer for the cockpit that fills a gap between off-the-shelf tablet PCs typically costing less than $5,000 and permanently installed devices that can top $30,000.
Engineers from Rockwell Collins are immersed in the task of redesigning a satellite direct TV antenna to bring Boeing’s broadband Connexion service to super-midsize and larger business jets. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa avionics manufacturer anticipates initial flight tests of a prototype of the new antenna in the coming months and commercial introduction of Connexion hardware late next year.
Ibis Aerospace has selected Honeywell’s Apex glass cockpit for the Ae270 turboprop single, but it is still unclear whether the avionics will be standard or optional. At EBACE in Geneva in late May, Honeywell and Ibis put out a joint press release saying Apex would be the standard cockpit in the airplane.
In May, Audio International, a DeCrane Aircraft company, and Avtec reached an agreement that allows Audio International to distribute Avtec’s cabin-lighting products in conjunction with Audio International’s in-flight entertainment and cabin-management systems. “This long-term affiliation strengthens the market reach for both companies,” said Avtec marketing manager Nate Breindel.
Of some 3,572 TFE731-2 and -3 engines on U.S.-registered business jets that would have to get their low-pressure turbine stage 1 disks repetitively checked for fatigue cracks, it is estimated that about 1,900 would need to replace the disks, if the FAA adopts a proposed AD. The directive would essentially mandate compliance with a two-year-old Honeywell Service Bulletin that addresses possible fatigue cracking in the disks.
